The Bunyip, or the Mulyawonk as it is known by the Ngarrindjeri people, is a legendary monster said to lurk in the swamps and rivers of Australia. The supposed appearance of a Bunyip wildly varies from tribe to tribe however, many accounts describe the creature as having a body similar to a hippopotamus, an elongated neck and a head resembling that of a boar's. The Bunyip is known for its booming roar that is said to carry across the bush. Reports of the Bunyip's demeanor also tend to be contradictory with many describing it as a murderous, man-eating monster, and others reporting shy and timid behaviour from what they believe to be a plant eating creature. Although the origin story of the legendary Bunyip may differ from tribe to tribe the Ngarrindjeri creation story tells the tale of a Ngarrindjeri man who, filled with greed, continuously overfished from the rivers. He would take much more than he could eat and the Elders were appalled with his behaviour and blatant disrespect of the Ngarrindjeri laws of fishing. As punishment for his actions the Elders transformed him into the Mulyawonk and banished him to the rivers forever. Indigenous Australian children were told to never swim alone or be greedy in their fishing or the Mulyawonk would get them. However, mainstream science claims the Bunyip's existence lies solely in the minds of it's believers, making this creature a cryptid. A cryptid is an animal that's existence is commonly suggested but is generally disputed and unsubstantiated. Some argue the origin of the legend may come from the possible twisting and exaggeration of the appearance of a Diprotodon over several generations. The Diprotodon, also known as a giant wombat, is an extinct marsupial, indigenous to Australia, said to have lived from between 1.77 million to 780,00 years ago until between 50,000 to 25,000 years ago. This creature is said to have had an average height of 1.8 metres on all fours, and a length of four metres. It is the largest known marsupial to have ever lived and it's generated appearance is extremally similar to many people's beliefs of that of a Bunyip's. However, this pre-historic creature's existence does not explain the supposed modern day existence of a Bunyip. Many people attribute accounts of the Bunyip to imagination, misidentification and hoaxes, however it is still unknown whether or not this legendary creature roams the billabong's of the outback, and it quite possibly never will be determined.
