Our Year 10 iSTEM students recently had the exciting opportunity to visit one of Australia’s most iconic landmarks – the Sydney Opera House – as part of their exploration into engineering, innovation, and design.
The excursion began with a guided tour of the Opera House, where students gained fascinating insights into the structural and architectural feats that made this world-renowned building possible. They learned about the complex geometry of the sails, the innovative use of materials, and the engineering challenges that had to be overcome to bring Jørn Utzon’s vision to life.
Following the tour, students participated in the Architecture Unboxed workshop. This hands-on session encouraged students to think creatively about form and function in architecture. Drawing inspiration from the Opera House itself, students designed and built their own prototype structures using a range of materials. The activity encouraged problem-solving, collaboration, and innovation – all key components of the iSTEM curriculum.
The day was a perfect blend of inspiration and application, allowing students to connect classroom learning with real-world design and engineering. It was also a great reminder of the power of creativity in shaping our built environment.
