This term, Year 7 students have had an exciting and eventful start to their time at Kogarah High School.
They kicked off the term with the Tops Day Camp, where students spent two fun-filled days getting to know each other, completing physical challenges, and learning all about the expectations of high school. In both sweltering heat and storming rain, they showed great resilience as they swung from trees, raced each other in carts, and completed the survivor course in the bush.
As part of the Reading Program, all Year 7 students were gifted a copy of the book Limelight, a collection of slam poetry.
The author, Solli Raphael, became the youngest winner of the Australian Poetry Slam competition in 2017, when he was only 12 years old.
Solli Raphael visited the school to give a presentation on his poetry writing process. Some Year 7s were even lucky enough to get Solli to autograph their copies of Limelight!
In Week 5, students were also given the opportunity to demonstrate their speed and stamina at the Cross Country carnival at Scarborough Park. It was impressive to watch so many students walk or run 3km, before enjoying their sausage sizzle and ice blocks. The next sports event will be the Athletics Carnival in Term 2, which will be an awesome opportunity for students to demonstrate their athleticism and skill in a range of events.
In Week 7, students completed NAPLAN, completing their Reading, Writing, Language Conventions and Numeracy tests online. Many students were very confident about their responses in these tests, and results will be made available to parents later in the year.
In Week 9, our local Youth Engagement Officers from NSW Police came to KHS to speak to Year 7s about online safety and laws around social media. Students were very respectful and engaged during this presentation, and asked some very interesting questions about cyber safety.
Students will finish this term with a movie afternoon, to recognise those who have consistently demonstrated Respect, Responsibility, Reflection and Resilience at Kogarah High School.
The Year 7 Advisors look forward to being able to organise more incursions and excursions to recognise and reward students with positive behaviour and attendance throughout the year.
