Dear Parents / Caregivers,
Welcome back to Term 3! It has been a fantastic start to the term, with students settled in classrooms and enjoying their learning programs.
Outstanding NAPLAN Results
Congratulations to our Year 3 and 5 students on their amazing NAPLAN results and to all our incredible YPS staff and parents on all their hard work. YPS exceeded state and statistically similar schools in every single area of the NAPLAN - a huge achievement! To say that I am proud would be an understatement! Well done all.
Athletics Carnival
Our annual Athletics Carnival was a huge success - beautiful weather, crazy teachers’ race and lots of fun and fitness with friends. Thank you to Mr Robson and Mrs Bryant for your organisation and all the staff for their support of the day. Congratulations to all students who participated and we wish our Zone athletes all the best as they head off to the next level to represent our school! Many thanks also to the parent helpers and community members who came to support the carnival.
State Cross Country
Congratulations to Channing who came 7th at the State Cross Country Carnival. We are very proud of you!
100 Days of Learning
Kindergarten had a wonderful day celebrating 100 days of learning at big school with amazing outfits, fairy bread and a special afternoon with someone from home. Thank you to everyone who came and Mrs Edwards and Miss Hatchell for all your effort in making the day so special for our littlest learners.
2026 and Open Day
It seems to sneak up so quickly, but the Department is already planning for 2026, and YPS is the place to be! Do you know someone interested in joining our amazing school community? Please have them reach out to our office or fill in an enrolment form on our website. Prospective families are also welcome to attend our Open Day celebrations on Thursday from 1pm. Many thanks to the P&C for putting on the snack boxes for afternoon tea - you can order these now on Schools24!
P&C
Our next P&C meeting is tonight - 7pm on Teams. We hope you can join us to hear about all the exciting things happening at YPS.
Debating Team
I am so proud of our YPS debating team who have improved so much over the 4 debates and won their last debate against Lucas Heights Community School. Debating is not an easy skill, but these girls have done an incredible job representing our school. Many thanks to Mrs Nicoll for all her support and guidance with the debating team.
SRC Semester 2
Congratulations to those students who were selected to represent their class this semester as part of the SRC. It was a pleasure to induct you into this important leadership role last Friday and I know you will be a great asset to student voice in our school. Thank you to our outgoing Semester 1 SRC reps - you were very active and supported both our school and some charities and you deserve to feel proud of all your efforts.
Community Assistance Needed
Our Wakakirri team is looking to borrow a Pantech truck to help transport props and costumes to and from the performance venue. If you or someone you know can assist, please contact our office by phone or email. We appreciate your support!
Extra-Curricular Representatives
We wish our Wakakirri team and junior choir all the best as they represent our school in the coming weeks. Thank you to Miss Chesworth, Mrs Nicoll and Mrs Greening for your support of these programs - our children are lucky to have your support so that they can participate in these activities.
Community Use of School Facilities
The Department of Education encourages the community to use school facilities for appropriate purposes when they are not required by the school or the department. A Community Use Agreement is organised by the school office for a variety of reasons including, our ongoing community users (see table below), one-off uses of the hall / school grounds for things such as preschool graduation ceremonies, parties, holiday programs, playgroups etc. If you are interested in hiring school facilities, please contact the office. All funds raised by community use agreements go directly to the school and help fund improving school assets and teaching and learning programs.
Current Ongoing Community Users at YPS
We also have a soccer group joining us shortly and Camp Australia who hire our cottage for before and after school care and, as of last holidays, vacation care.
No Pets Allowed On Department of Education Sites
Pets are not permitted on NSW Department of Education sites (except in specific, authorised cases such as accredited assistance dogs) because of health, safety, legal and animal welfare risks. The Companion Animals Act 1998 restricts dogs on school grounds unless permission is granted, and schools must meet broader legislative and risk-management requirements (e.g., via the Animals in Schools compliance framework) to safeguard people and animals. Keeping pets offsite unless formally approved helps protect the wellbeing of students and staff and ensures regulatory compliance. Please do not bring your pets on school grounds at any time. Thank you for your assistance.
Staffing Update
Mrs Lynch will be taking leave from Weeks 4-9 of this term. We welcome Mrs Jessica Huntingdon, APCI at Marton Public School, to join our team on a Monday-Wednesday and Mr Riley Cox will relieve as APCI on a Thursday during this period. I thank both staff members for stepping in to relieve for Mrs Lynch. Miss Tiffany Peters, a regular teacher at YPS, will teach 3/4C on a Thursday.
National Child Protection Week 7-13 September 2025
National Child Protection Week is an annual campaign by the National Association for the Prevention of Child Abuse and Neglect (NAPCAN).
It aims to engage, educate, and empower Australians to understand the complexity of child abuse and neglect and work together towards prevention.
In 2025, National Child Protection Week will continue to champion the overarching message ‘Every child, in every community, needs a fair go’, which will be complemented with the theme ‘Every conversation matters: Shifting Conversation to Action’.
This year, the focus is on moving beyond conversations to concrete actions that prevent harm and instead, focusing on strengthening support systems, and empowering communities to actively protect children.
By shifting from conversation to action, we can ensure that every child not only feels heard but also experiences real safety, care, and protection.

Bullying No Way week 11-15 August
The theme for 2025 is 'Be bold. Be kind. Speak up.' All classes at YPS will be doing the Kids Helpline anti-bullying lesson on Monday 11 August. Created by qualified Kids Helpline Counsellors, the lesson is curriculum-aligned and will provide students with expert tips, tools and strategies to respond to bullying. Kids Helpline, powered by yourtown is Australia’s only free and confidential, 24/7 online and phone counselling service for young people aged 5 – 25. The support doesn’t end when the lesson does! Students can always pop a note into our Wellbeing letterbox, located on the admin building near the Lucky Chance letterbox, if they ever need to speak to someone.
The Importance of Sleep
Sleep affects learning, mood, behaviour and resilience. A total of 9 to 11 hours of sleep each night is recommended for children aged 5 to 13 years. Share this video with your school community which explains why sleep is important and includes some tips for helping children sleep well.
