Lesson 3

Learning intention

We are learning how sand is used and how to care for natural resources.

Success criteria

We can describe how sand in the Georges River Catchment has been used by people and how we can care for natural resources.

Sand in the Georges River

Activity 1: Where do we find sand and how is it used?

Where can we find sand?

Watch the video on how to conduct this experiment. This is an easy one to do if you have access to soil.

What you will need:

  • garden soil

  • trowel or small spade

  • plastic jar

  • water

  • to leave the experiment overnight to settle.

How much sand is in your soil sample?

What is in sand?

Watch the video 'What's sand made of?' to discover a quick and easy experiment with sand and a magnet to find if there are any magnetic rocks in your sand samples.

Did you find any magnetic rocks in your sample?

Remember, if you are going outside, please get permission from an adult and be supervised while collecting samples and conducting experiments.

Sand and soil samples

You can collect soil/sand samples by going outside with a piece of sticky tape or a glue stick and piece of paper or a nature journal. Press the centre of a piece of tape onto the soil/sand surface and small pieces of soil/sand will attach to the tape. Alternatively, you can rub a glue stick on your page and press it onto the soil/sand.

Can you see sand particles in your sample? Compare 2 or 3 soil/sand samples from different locations outside.

Activity 2: How do we use sand?

What things do we make using sand?

This quick one minute video shows images of items that are made using sand. Do you have or use any of these items?

Is there enough sand in the world?

This video helps explain the issues around using sand.

Is glass made from sand?

This video explains how sand is turned into glass.

Real-world sandstone is made in exactly the same way that Minecraft sandstone is.

You can use the program Minecraft Education Edition to build using sandstone and sand in a Minecraft world (https://education.minecraft.net/en-us/homepage). Ask your teacher to set this up for your class.

Activity 3: What other natural resources are in the Upper Georges River Catchment?

Watch the Upper Georges River video again. This time, can you see other natural resources that are found in the catchment that people could use?

Woronora Dam

What natural resource does Woronora Dam supply the people of Sydney? Watch the short video about the dam.
