Lesson 2

Learning intention

We are learning to name natural resources.

Success criteria

We can name some natural resources in the Georges River Catchment.

What natural resources are found in the Georges River?

Activity 1: Is sand a natural resource in the Georges River?

Watch the video about Simmos Beach, located in the Upper Georges River Catchment at Macquarie Fields.

Share this fascinating video about sand. This images in this video are brilliant and show how amazing this natural resource is. Take a journey into 'The Amazing Life of Sand'.

If you have access to some samples of sand, sandstone, emery board or sandpaper, this would be the perfect time to get hands-on with real samples. Explore what the sand feels like and how small the sand particles are. Use a hand lens or magnifying glass to see the particles up-close.

Activity 2: How does sand move and where does it end up?

Sand Flow Model

Sand moving down a river video.mp4

See how sand moves along a river with the help of a sand-flow model at the Georges River Environmental Education Centre.

Do all the sand particles roll down the river or do some travel in different ways?

Why are some sand particles and pebbles round?

Share this quick video to find out.

Remember if you are going outside please get permission from an adult and be supervised while collecting sand samples and conducting the experiment.

Watch this video that shows how you can set up an experiment to illustrate how sand moves down a river.

This experiment is very easy to set up and only requires a few items:

  • a baking tray/tote tray

  • sand/soil

  • jug of water

  • a thick book or piece of wood or brick

  • a towel.
