Average insect measurements

Average insect measurements - What are they?

Average organism measurements are recorded to calculate the average organism size. This is used to express the growth of our stick insects over time. This is done by recording the same organism measurements on a weekly basis. The measurements we are recording are mass, weight and colour. This is done by sampling 5 insects weekly and covering the measurements mentioned.

By gathering a set of measurements from 5 different insects and calculating an average, we are able to create accurate predictions as to what the next few outcomes may be. Because of this, we can justify the correctness of our results by directly comparing them back to the average result.

Length

Length is measured in centimeters (cm), by placing the insect onto a flat surface and placing a ruler right by their side. This can be difficult if the stick insect moves, but we found that they usually stay still when dealt with delicately and patiently. This process is repeated for 5 individual insects.

Weight

Weight is measured in grams (g), utilising a sensitive scale. A container is placed on the scale and the scale is reset. Then, it is just a process of placing an insect into the container and recording the weight shown on the scale. This process is repeated for 5 individual insects.

Colour

Colour is measured visually. Any noticeable changes are noted during the measurement process. Unlike length and weight, this is not calculated in the average, but is merely an additional consideration to show growth.

Spreadsheet

This process is simplified by using a spreadsheet (right). The spreadsheet allows us to record our results quickly and easily, and even calculates averages for us.

The spreadsheet below shows our weekly average measurement and the process behind the calculation. This will be updated weekly throughout the project.
