First Days of School

Your child's first day of school will be

Monday 6 February 2023

A specific starting time for your child's first day will be emailed to you at the end of the year. This specific starting time is only for the first day of school.

Students will start their first day of school in small groups to allow the teacher to have time to settle each student and get them unpacked and ready for their day before the next group of students arrive.

Our usual school hours are 9:00am - 3:00pm.

Kindergarten start at 9:00am each day and will finish their day at 2:45pm for the first couple of weeks.

Students will spend their first few days getting to know the school environment and their peers.

They will engage in activities such as a school tour, literacy based play, numeracy based play

& free play.

During recess and lunch breaks students will play in a special Kindy only area for the first few weeks of school. This allows them time to develop friendships with peers rather than relying on siblings or other known students. It also provides a comfortable place to play without being overwhelmed by the main playground spaces. After two or three weeks they are then introduced to the large playgrounds for play time.

Permanent classes for Kindergarten 2023 will not be allocated for a few weeks. This allows teachers to get to know the cohort of students well before finalising our classes for the year.

Students will be placed in classes based on numbers of girls and boys, combinations of personalities and support networks.

LUNCH BOXES

Manageable storage of food in students' bags can make a huge difference to a child's confidence.

Students eat three times a day at school:

- fruit break

- recess

- lunch

We ask that you pack each meal break in separate containers so that just one can be taken out of their bag for their meal break. It is a good idea to show your child which containers are for fruit break, recess and lunch before school so that they are familiar with what they have.

Managing one large lunch box with multiple compartments often results in confusion over when to eat each type of food packed or, all their food for the day is accidentally dropped on the ground.

Fruit break must be a small amount of fruit or vegetables preferably cut up, so that it is very quick and easy to manage. For example cut up apple slices or carrot sticks or a small amount of strawberries. This can be sent in a small snap lock bag or small plastic container. Fruit break is a very short opportunity in class time for all students to eat some fruit (or vegetables), which helps hungry students to last until recess. This usually occurs at approximately 10:00am each day.

During January, before your child starts school, allow them time to practise opening and closing their school bag, pulling out a lunch box or container and opening it. Developing some independence early on can boost their confidence at school by providing them with the skills to manage their own belongings without needing to wait for a teacher to help.

Please also send your child to school with a refillable water bottle each day.

As shown in the examples above, if your child brings one storage container for each meal break, their food is more easily and quickly located in their bag when it is time for them to eat.

Please assist teachers by planning and preparing for this before your child starts school with the above examples in mind.
