Jenny Scheffers: Good morning everyone, today our special visitors are Emma Quay and Lisa Shanahan who are here to read their brand new book ‘Bear & Chook by the Sea’. Welcome Lisa and Emma.
Emma Quay: Thank you Jenny. Hello, everyone. I’m Emma and this is Lisa, Lisa wrote ‘Bear & Chook by the Sea’ and I’m the illustrator of the book, so I drew the pictures. Now, this is an exciting day for us because this is our brand new book and we have never ever read it to a group of children before.
Lisa Shanahan: And here we go. This is the story of ‘Bear & Chook by the Sea’. Bear and Chook were fast asleep when a breeze came sniffing and licking. ‘Chook,’ said Bear, sitting up, ‘that wind is as warm as honey toast.’
Emma: ‘Go back to sleep,’
Lisa: said Chook. ‘That’s a holiday breeze,’ said Bear.
Emma: ‘No, no, no,’
Lisa: muttered Chook, opening one eye.
Emma: ‘The stars are still out.’
Lisa: ‘That’s a holiday sky,’ said Bear. ‘It’s time to go.’ Bear made such a racket that before long Chook was wide awake.
Emma: ‘Where are we going?’
Lisa: asked Chook. ‘To the sea.’ said Bear.
Emma: ‘To the sea!’
Lisa: cried Chook.
Emma: ‘But we don’t know the way.’
Lisa: ‘It can’t be far,’ said Bear. ‘Just around the pond, under the bridge, through the forest and over the mountain.’
Emma: ‘That’s a long way for a Chook,’
Lisa: said Chook. ‘But not for a bear,’ said Bear. After a quick bite of breakfast, Bear and Chook were on their way. Flomp, flomp,
Emma: scratch, scratch,
Lisa: flomp, flomp,
Emma: scratch,
Lisa: around the pond they tramped.
Emma: ‘It’s dark out here,’
Lisa: shivered Chook. ‘Yes,’ said Bear. Honky-tonk-tonk-tonk.
Emma: ‘What’s that?’
Lisa: squawked Chook. ‘A frog,’ said Bear
Emma: ‘I want to go home,’
Lisa: whimpered Chook. ‘Look,’ said Bear ‘there’s the bridge.’ Flomp, flomp,
Emma: scratch, scratch,
Lisa: flomp, flump,
Emma: scratch.
Lisa: Under the bridge they traipsed.
Emma: ‘It’s squashy under here,’
Lisa: shivered Chook. ‘Yes,’ said Bear. Rickety-clickety-rickety-clickety-chooo-choooo!
Emma: ‘What’s that?’
Lisa: squawked Chook. ‘A train,’ said Bear.
Emma: ‘I want to go home,’
Lisa: moaned Chook. ‘Look,’ said Bear, ‘there’s the forest.’ Flomp, flomp,
Emma: scratch, scratch,
Lisa: flomp, flomp,
Emma: scratch,
Lisa: through the forest they trudged.
Emma: ‘It’s spooky in here,’
Lisa: shivered Chook. ‘Yes,’ said Bear. Hoo-hoo-hoooo!
Emma: ‘What’s that?’
Lisa: squawked Chook. ‘An owl,’ said Bear.
Emma: ‘I want to go home!’
Lisa: gasped Chook. ‘Look,’ said Bear, ‘there’s the mountain.’ Flomp, flomp,
Emma: scratch, scratch,
Lisa: flomp, flomp,
Emma: scratch.
Lisa: Over the mountain they trekked.
Emma: It’s high up here,’
Lisa: shivered Chook. ‘Yes,’ said Bear. Pting-ting-ting-ting!
Emma: ‘What’s that?’
Lisa: squawked Chook. ‘A stone,’ said Bear.
Emma: ‘I want to go home!’
Lisa: wailed Chook. ‘Look,’ said Bear, ‘there’s the sea!’ The sun was rising and the sea shone like a lizard’s skin. Bear and Chook raced through the prickly grass and down to the sea. ‘Listen to the waves!’ said Bear.
Emma: ‘This sand is crunchy!’
Lisa: said Chook. Bear danced by the water’s edge. Chook scratched and pecked and poked.
Emma: ‘Isn’t this fun!’
Lisa: said Chook. ‘Isn’t this great!’ said Bear. After lunch, Bear dug a hole. Chook searched the shore for the perfect shell. And together they explored the giant rock pools.
Emma: It’s getting late,’
Lisa: said Chook.
Emma: ‘Nearly time to go.’
Lisa: ‘Not yet,’ said Bear. ‘I haven’t been in.’
Emma: ‘In where?’
Lisa: asked Chook. ‘In the sea!’ said Bear.
Emma: ‘In there?’
Lisa: cried Chook. ‘Yes,’ said Bear. ‘I want to catch a wave.’ Splosh! Bear went in.
Emma: ‘Be careful!’
Lisa: called Chook.
Emma: ‘Not too far out!’
Lisa: ‘Whee-heee!’ yelled Bear. He flapped and flipped. ‘Yee-haaa!’ He rolled and spun. ‘Whoo-hooo! Chook, I’m as light as you!’ Just then a big, big wave slicked up from the deep.
Emma: ‘Watch out!’
Lisa: squawked Chook. Rumbly … jumbly … tumbly … pop!
Emma: ‘Oh Bear,’
Lisa: cried Chook,
Emma: ‘are you all right?’
Lisa: ‘I want to go home!’ sobbed Bear. Flomp, flomp,
Emma: scratch, scratch.
Lisa: Away from the sea, through the prickly grass. ‘I want to go home!’ wailed Bear.
Emma: ‘There’s the mountain,’
Lisa: said Chook. Flomp, flomp,
Emma: scratch, scratch,
Lisa: over the mountain. Pting-ting-ting-ting! ‘I want to go home!’
Emma: ‘There’s the forest,’
Lisa: said Chook. Flomp, flomp,
Emma: scratch, scratch,
Lisa: through the forest Hoo-hoo-hoooo! ‘I want to go home!’
Emma: ‘There’s the bridge’
Lisa: said Chook. Flomp, flomp,
Emma: scratch, scratch,
Lisa: under the bridge. Rickety-clickety-rickety-clickety-chooo-oooo! ‘I want to go home!’
Emma: ‘There’s the pond,’
Lisa: said Chook. Flomp, flomp,
Emma: scratch, scratch,
Lisa: around the pond. Honky-tonk-tonk-tonk. ‘I want to go home!’
Emma: ‘Look,’
Lisa: said Chook.
Emma: ‘Here we are’.
Lisa: And Chook made Bear warm honey toast. That night, after supper, Bear and Chook lay by the pond and watched the moon. A breeze, as soft as a kiss, fluttered in the trees. ‘I think,’ said Bear, ‘with a proper surfboard I could have ridden that wave.’
Emma: ‘Oh Bear,’
Lisa: said Chook,
Emma: ‘of course you could.’
Lisa: And that’s the end of the story.
