Teacher to:

• revise Lisa Shanahan’s use of the words ‘flomp’ and ‘scratch’ to show that the characters are walking
• prompt a discussion about other words that describe sounds.

Students to:

• review the character that they have created
• decide which sound their characters would make when they walk
• use their understanding of phonics to spell or create a spelling for the word.

Students to:

• act out their character walking and make the sound
• create a sentence describing the movements of their character
• digitally record the sound word that they have invented and/or record them walking and making the sound (support where necessary).

The aim of this lesson is to investigate verbs and perhaps adverbial phrases. It also provides students an opportunity to use phonics as a tool for spelling unfamiliar words.

Once the word is created and spelt students can then use this word to act out their character moving and record this creation in some way, either by recording the sound or video of the movement and sound. These files should be saved in the folder along with their other work on their character.

Completing this activity affords students the opportunity to:

• use a variety of strategies, including knowledge of sight words and letter–sound correspondences, to spell familiar words (EN1-5A)
• think imaginatively and creatively about familiar topics, ideas and texts when responding to and composing texts (EN1-10C)
• take on roles in drama to explore familiar and imagined situations (DRAS1.1)
• appreciate dramatic work during the making of their own drama and the drama of others (DRAS1.4).
• recognise and explore digital systems (hardware and software components) for a purpose (ACTDIK001)
• create and organise ideas and information using information systems independently and with others, and share these with known people in safe online environments (ACTDIP006).
