Best Start Assessment

Booking a Best Start Assessment Interview

Families will be provided with Interview booking information at the Transition days in Term 4.

On the day of the Best Start Interview:

During your interview time you will participate in an interview with a teacher, while your child talks to another teacher and undertakes English and Mathematics assessments. The assessment will take approximately 30 minutes. You must stay at school while the teacher conducts the assessment with your child.

Your child does not need to wear school uniform on this day.

What is Best Start?

Best Start Kindergarten Assessment is a literacy and numeracy assessment conducted for all Kindergarten students in the first five weeks of school.

It identifies a student's literacy and numeracy skills on entry to Kindergarten and has been conducted in all NSW public schools since 2010.

There is no preparation you need to do with your child prior to the assessment. The purpose of Best Start is to provide an opportunity for your child to show us any prior skills and knowledge they're coming to school in literacy and numeracy so that our teachers can target their teaching accordingly.

Further information can be found here in the NSW Department of Education's Parent Fact Sheet.
