Extremadura’s Council plans to maintain the measures that are currently in force to deal with the covid-19 pandemic for several months. José María Vergeles, has indicated that it will be necessary to continue with these restrictions due to the increase in infections, with which the passage to the new normal phase is still far away.
In an appearance in the Extremadura Assembly, Vergeles has indicated that the community presents very positive data in hospital admissions (1.36% of occupied acute beds), ICU (5.74% , three times less than the national average), positivity in tests (around 2.5%) and asymptomatic cases (around 85%). It has also highlighted that the incidence in people over 65 is practically at new normal levels.
However, he has pointed out that the return to mobility is expected to begin to show its consequences in the coming days, once the incubation period has already been exceeded since the state of alarm ended on May 9. In fact, he expects a spike in cases for behaviors "that we saw and didn't like."
As Vergeles has explained, despite the advances in vaccination, the appearance of outbreaks will mean that the accumulated incidence in the region in fourteen days will remain between 78 and 80 cases. He has once again drawn attention to communions, as four outbreaks have been detected to date. He has insisted that he is not opposed to its celebration, but has asked that preventive measures be followed.
This stabilization in the incidence will force to maintain sanitary measures and to continue making decisions, such as the perimeter closure of Los Santos de Maimona, due to the fact that the incidence exceeds 500 cases in the last two weeks. The Minister of Health has announced that the rest of the municipalities that remain confined will come out of this situation next Saturday. They are Jaraíz de la Vera, Ahigal, Palomas and Piornal.
But Vergeles has highlighted that the situation has changed compared to previous periods. Currently the highest incidence figures are in the age group between 15 and 39 years, while in the first wave the most affected were those over 80 years of age.
Vergeles has also pointed out that the British Variant continues to be the majority in the region with 98% of the positives. But he added that 35 cases of the Brazilian Variant and three of the Indian Variant have been detected. As for the meeting of the Interterritorial Health Council, he highlighted the agreement for the presence in the classroom in the next course and the possibility that those vaccinated with AstraZeneca who are waiting for a second dose can choose between this drug and Pfizer.
