Thank you to all interested applicants for the 2025-2026 school year.
The application form for 2026-2027 school year will open up in early November 2025.
What is the IB program at Hvitfeldtska? We introduce the program on the Home and Contact page.
Applying to PreDP (grade 10)? Beforehand, it is a good idea to have read up on the range of courses we offer in the Diploma Program in year 2 and 3 (grade 11 and 12).
You can apply to Grade 10 or Grade 11.
Who can apply?
To be able to apply to any year level, you must be under the age of 20. Usually students are about 16 years old when they apply for 10th grade, however, that can vary depending on the individual and their education circumstances.
You can be considered no matter what type of school you have previously attended.
To apply to Grade 10 (pre-DP = year 1 of three high school years)
You must be in at least your 9th grade school year, and be on track to finish successfully.
To apply to Grade 11-12 (IB Diploma = the final two years, which must be done consecutively)
You must be in at least your 10th school year, and on track to finish successfully.
How to apply
These steps must be fully completed to be considered for a place in the program:
Submit the application form/s (accessed via APPLY HERE).
Grade 10 applications also involve the City of Gothenburg admissions system for high schools. This extra form is linked to in the apply section. As part of this process you will get to log into the online system INDRA. It is through INDRA that you get to know if you are offered a place or not.
Take the placement test (and read more about it under Admissions Test).
Send us your latest grade report.
Grade reports allow us to verify your identify and your eligibility to apply for the program. The grade report should be on school letterhead (i.e. including school name, logo, address, telephone, website, etc), and signed by a teacher, mentor, coordinator, or principal. The report should be an original document that you scan as a PDF file and attach to an email. Do not send images of your grade report. It should be a PDF file attachment.
Send the original report as well as a translation into English. The translation should not be done by the student or parent, but by someone at the school and should also be signed by the person who translated it, as well as their role at the school. When you go the application, it will say where to send the grade report.
When to apply
Feburary 2nd is the deadline to apply for the following school year which starts in August. This is the latest you can apply if you are applying from outside of the EU and your stay in Sweden is contingent upon you getting a place in the program.
If you live in the EU or already have your journey to Sweden booked for arrival by August, you can apply later than this, however, your chances of being able to be fully considered diminish more and more the later you apply.
June 1 is the absolute latest you can apply, if you live inside the EU, so that you can still take part in placement testing. You will not be considered for a place if you have not completed placement testing.
Visit our admissions timeline overview here.
Engaging in this application process from abroad requires a clear and transparent communication. When emailing us, please remember to sign your name. To facilitate tracking conversations, reply to an email string we have already started, as opposed to starting an entirely one each time.
The student applicant and their family must act with academic integrity. We reserve the right to close your application and the ensuing process at any point if we detect there may be a breach in academic integrity.
This could include any of the following (although the list is not exhaustive):
Not following instructions as per this website
Not accurately representing yourself or your identify
Not following the placement testing instructions
If we find out about a breach in academic integrity after you have arrived here, we reserve the right to de-register you as a student immediately.
We kindly remind applicants that Hvitfeldtska is not a boarding school, and we are unable to provide assistance with accommodation.
f you are living abroad and your only reason to come to Gothenburg is to be a student -either alone or with your family - you may need to apply for a residence permit. Start looking into the process as soon as you can; it may take some time, typically between 3 to 8 months.
Read more on the Swedish Migration Agency website.
You cannot complete the process for the residence permit until you know if you have a place at the school. When you do, we will provide a letter confirming your acceptance when needed. Tip: start the process early and add the acceptance letter later.
It can take up to 4 months for your application for a residence permit to be processed. This is why if you apply after mid-February, you may be too late to be part of the coming school year's process for admissions. In other words, apply as early as possible.
Some families ask if their child is able to study here on their own, without their parents' presence. While this is not common, it does happen from time to time if all the criteria below are met:
You have been offered a place at the school for full time studies.
The parent and student applicant have attended an online meeting with the principal and/or admissions group from the school
Your guardians can participate in development talks with the school (online) in English or can provide a translator when needed.
The parent gives written consent. It is part of the Swedish Migration Agency application, and the school also has a document to sign.
You are able to complete the residence permit application process successfully. Note there are other criteria you must meet, which you can read about in the link above. For example, you must provide proof of insurance valid in Sweden and that you have the means to cover living expenses during your stay.
You can arrange travel and lodging independently.
We are unable to offer further details or assistance concerning this topic. Please turn to the relevent embassy to know more about what documents you need to travel and stay here lawfully.
You can apply to Grade 10 or Grade 11.

Grade 10 - but not grade 11 - applicants who are very new to Sweden will have two application forms to complete, see link above.
Grade 10 applicants who have lived in Sweden for a while will also apply via the city application site INDRA. Your current study and career counselor ("SYV") will help you. If for some reason you don't have a SYV to help you, you can access a paper copy of the form under the APPLY HERE link. It is through INDRA that you get to know if you are accepted or placed on a reserve list.
Take the placement test (and read more about it under Admissions Test).
Send us your latest grade report. This is a required step only for Grade 11 applicants and Grade 10 applicants who are very new to Sweden and don't have grades from "grundskola" (grade 9). If you are part of the Swedish school system for some time, your grades come to us through the INDRA system.

Grade 11 students (Grade 10 students, read more below)
It is not permitted to start Grade 11 late.
The IB Diploma Program is a two-year education. The teaching and learning portion of the program can essentially be said to last 18 months. Year 1 (Grade 11) starts in August and lasts until June. Year 2 (Grade 12) starts in August of the following academic year and essentially lasts until mid-April at which point students begin revising for the final exams which happen in May of the final year.
The syllabus for the course is clear and specific, with precisely recommended hours allotted for each topic. Any loss of time results would cause setbacks to learning. Attendance is thus mandatory from the first day of school.
Grade 10 students
If you have been offered a place in the program, please note that we are unable to endlessly hold a place for a student to start. We need assurance that you are indeed coming to Sweden because:
one of your guardians has been offered a job
the residence permit process has been started
you have other verification of your impending move to Gothenburg
Even with assurances, sometimes there can be delays with the Migration Agency, or perhaps your parent's job does not start until later in the fall. If you have come to agreement with the Principal that you are permitted to start the school year later, then the rest of this page can help you understand what that might mean for you as the student.
Note that for students who are coming to Gothenburg solely because they have been offered a place in the program, we understand that there can be a delay in gaining permission to come or getting the residence permit. However, if you are not able to arrive here within 4 weeks of the first day of school (or the specified date told to you by the Principal), we will have to de-register you and offer your place to another student in the queue. Remember that those who apply in June or those that end up on a reserve list may not be able to find out if they are accepted until as late as August/September. This will definitely affect your ability to get here on time. Thus, it is best if you have a backup plan for school if you are a student in this situation.
If for whatever reason, you end up getting here late under permission of the Principal, here is what you should think about:
You will be a bit behind starting late and the ability to get caught up and get grades at the end of the school year can vary from student to student. Communicate with your teachers to see what you might need to do to catch up and use some of your breaks to do so.
Grades from Grade 10/PreDP will have varying degrees of importance to you, our school, or to other schools or universities.
The grades help you understand where your strengths are, and where you need to develop.
Students with a passing mark (at least an E) in a Stage 3 Modern Foreign Language course will get merit points (extra credit) by Swedish universities. Note: if you don't take a modern foreign language in PreDP, you have an opportunity to take the equivalent in the DP. It must not be "ab initio" and must not be English or Swedish to qualify for the merit points. For a PreDP student to be eligible to study a modern language course, they must have sufficient knowledge of Swedish to understand when the teacher my explain grammatical structures in Swedish.
Passing grades are necessary to be able to continue on into the Diploma Program (grade 11 and 12) at our school. *see below
If and when you apply to a university in Sweden, you apply with the results of your IB Diploma and you are not required to attach PreDP/Grade 10 grades. You are permitted to attach PreDP/Grade 10 grades as a complement to the application voluntarily.
If and when you apply to universities in other countries, you may or may not have to show grades from year 10. Therefore, if this is something you think might affect you in the future, it is best to do the research and find out from the university you might apply to later, if they require it or not. Most universities will accept the IB Diploma on its own.
*As mentioned above, if you come rather late in the school year, you may struggle to get a grade. Not because of your academic ability, but simply because of being late and not having had the chance to study everything required. In this extraordinary circumstance, you may be permitted to continue into the Diploma Program so long as your teachers provide a commentary assessment and inform the Principal that you show readiness to take on the next challenge of going into the Diploma Program.
There is no tutition fee. However, in the City of Gothenburg, there is a fee (approx. 750 euro) in the final year of the program to cover the costs of the IB examination. We charge approximately 750 EURO (for the 24-25 school year) to cover the costs of the IB examinations.
The school provides all students with textbooks, a computer and lunch on school days. Students are asked to come prepared with their own pens, pencils, and notebooks.
In some subjects students may choose to purchase their own books or materials. For example, in some English courses teachers encourage students to buy their own paperback novels to facitilitate note-taking. Arts/Design students must purchase their own materials if they wish to work with things the school doesn't have on hand.
The school is connected to a number of scholarship funds and students can apply for financial support or scholarships if they meet the criteria. You can read more about this on the Hvitfeldtska school webpage, under the tab "Stipendier".
Full Diploma or Course Candidate?
The IB path at Hvitfeldtska is a university preparedness path. When students are offered a place in the Pre-Diploma Program, the school’s goal is that they will be on track to become a Full Diploma Candidate in the Diploma Program.
We have several checkpoints where the Principal, teaching team, and the student health team follow up student progress and the students’ own educational goals. A final decision about their registration status can be made any time in the program, as early as possible, and it can come from either the school or the students’ perspective. It is the Principal who makes the final decision regarding a student’s registration status with the IB. When course candidacy becomes a consideration, the student is offered a meeting with the Study and Career Counselor for guidance and advice.
A breach in any of our IB policies within a subject will result in being de-registered from that subject’s final assessment with the IB, which means the student would no longer be a Full Diploma Candidate.
