The Elderly
The nutritional needs of elderly people are difficult to categorise neatly. Dietary needs depend on current health and, while many elderly people are fit and active, others may be less active, frail, and needing additional care. People are living longer so it is important that elderly people eat a balanced diet to help them stay healthy.
· Elderly require smaller portions of food of nutritionally good foods
· Some elderly lose their sense of taste so may increase salt intake, which can be bad as it can increase risk of strokes. Use spices and herbs to add flavour .
· A limited budget may affect food choice, so eat a well balanced diet with small portion of expensive foods such as meat and fish.
· Some elderly may have difficulty chewing due to loss of teeth, so easy to eat foods are a good option eg soups, fish, etc.
Protein, which is required to maintain and repair body tissue, particularly when people are recovering from an illness.
Calcium, phosphorous and vitamin D are needed to maintain healthy bones and prevent osteoporosis.
