Teenagers

A teenager is classed as someone between the ages of 13-19.

A teenager’s diet often reflects their family; however, it is also influenced by peer pressure and the social media. Teenagers can face the problem of developing unhealthy eating habits/ disorganised eating habits associated with dieting and slimming.

Growth spurs often occur during adolescence, so protein is required to ensure that teenagers' body tissues grow, are maintained and repair properly. Calcium, phosphorous and Vitamin D form what is known as an interrelationship and are needed for bone and teeth development.

There is an increased demand for energy, as the teenage body changes and grows. Blood volume also increases so Iron and Vitamin C are needed to ensure the blood stays healthy. Teenage girls especially need to increase this once they start getting their period or this can lead to Anaemia and as a consequence they may feel very tired and low in energy.

Teenagers can be prone to a number of deficiencies if they do not follow a healthy and balanced diet:

·         Iron Deficiency (Anaemia)

·         Calcium Deficiency
