Pregnancy + Lactation

The eating pattern of a pregnant woman is very important to allow the baby to grow and to keep the mother healthy.

The baby will take the nutrients first so the mother must ensure she has a good diet so she does not become deficient in some nutrients.

Pregnant women should avoid pate, soft cheese such as brie as they may contain listeria bacteria which can be harmful to the unborn baby.  Raw eggs must be avoided and eggs must be cooked thoroughly to kill any salmonella bacteria as it can be harmful to the unborn baby.

Nutrients needed for pregnant women

·         Extra protein is needed for development of unborn baby, but too much could result in weight gain

·         Complex carbohydrates for energy. It is important not to eat too much carbohydrates as too much weight is gained if mother may not be so active

·         Calcium and vit D for development of baby’s strong bones and teeth are supplied by mother. It is important that calcium is not taken from mothers bones and teeth.

·         Iron  will be provided by a balanced diet. Iron is important as the baby is born with a store of iron for the first 4 months  after birth. It also helps the unborn baby’s brain to develop.

·         Vit C to help absorption of iron which prevents anaemia in the mother and allows baby to grow.

·         Omega 3 helps unborn baby’s brain to develop

Nutrients needed for lactating women

Lactating women need a balanced diet rich in nutrients. They should consume extra calories, protein, and calcium to support milk production. A variety of fruits, vegetables, lean proteins, and whole grains are essential. Staying hydrated is crucial, so drinking plenty of water is important for both mum and baby's health.
