School Councils provide a way for parents and the community to consult with and offer advice to principals to enhance student learning. School councils are legislated under the Education Act and are mandatory for all schools in the public education system, including charter schools. The School Council Regulation, under the Education Act provides more detailed guidance on establishing and hosting a School Council. Here are a few highlights.
Advise the principal and the Board of Trustees respecting any matter relating to the school, such as:

Alberta Education initiatives
Respecting diversity and promoting inclusion
Advancing reconciliation
Development of school policies
Annual Results Report
Education plans
Development of the school budget
School Fees
Assurance Framework
Perform any duty as delegated to it by the Board of Trustees
Decide operating procedures for itself
Carry out activities related to its advisory role

13(1) A school council may receive donations on behalf of a board but no school council shall raise funds or otherwise solicit donations in any manner that would require a gaming licence under the Gaming, Liquor and Cannabis Act. (See Fundraising)
