In every subject, a part of the programme, may be internally assessed by the subject teacher and moderated by the IB.
Students take their final written exams, which are all sent to the IB to be marked externally, in the May of their final year. There are 2-3 papers (=exams) in each subject and there can be several papers for several subjects for a student to take in one day. The examination session lasts for 3 weeks.
The final results for each subject are available online on 6th of July. Students can access their own results with their own passcodes. The results can also be made available for universities online if the student has requested this service.
If students are unhappy with the results, they can contact the coordinator to
submit a request to the IB to have their work re-marked. There is a fee to pay and the grade can also be lowered.
discuss the possibility of retaking the exams. Normally Ressu IB DP students can retake in November if they have failed the diploma and in May if they want to improve their grades.
Students who are fluent in Finnish can also consider the possibility of taking the Finnish matriculation examination in the autumn. This must be discussed with the student counselors before the summer holiday.
The printed diploma documents will arrive in the school by the end of August and the students will get them in the graduation ceremony arranged by the school.
A grade will only be awarded for a candidate in a subject in which all of the required assessment components have been completed.
The grading scheme in use for IB DP examinations is as follows:
7: excellent
6: very good
5: good
4: satisfactory
3: mediocre
2: poor
1: very poor
Bonus points
The maximum diploma point score is 45. Excellent performance in all six subject areas results in 42 points (7 for each subject). In addition, the student can get 0-3 bonus points, based on a combination of the performance levels achieved by the candidate in both the Extended Essay and Theory of Knowledge according to a Diploma Point Matrix.
A candidate who, for example, writes a good extended essay and whose performance in Theory of Knowledge is judged to be satisfactory will be awarded 1 point, while a candidate who writes a mediocre extended essay and whose performance in Theory of Knowledge is judged to be excellent will be awarded 2 points.
Award of a Diploma on overall score
Article 13: Award of the IB Diploma (From: General Regulations Diploma Programme)
All assessment components for each of the six subjects and the additional Diploma requirements
must be completed in order to qualify for the award of the IB Diploma, except under the conditions
stipulated in articles 18 and 19 of these regulations.

Article 13.2 The IB Diploma will be awarded to a candidate provided all the following requirements have been met.
a. CAS requirements have been met.
b. The candidate’s total points are 24 or more.
c. There is no “N” awarded for theory of knowledge, the extended essay or for a contributing
subject.
d. There is no grade E awarded for theory of knowledge and/or the extended essay.
e. There is no grade 1 awarded in a subject/level.
f. There are no more than two grade 2s awarded (HL or SL).
g. There are no more than three grade 3s or below awarded (HL or SL).
h. The candidate has gained 12 points or more on HL subjects (for candidates who register for four HL subjects, the three highest grades count).
i. The candidate has gained 9 points or more on SL subjects (candidates who register for two SL subjects must gain at least 5 points at SL).
j. The candidate has not received a penalty for academic misconduct from the Final Award Committee.

Bilingual Diplomas
A bilingual diploma will be awarded to a successful candidate who fulfils one or both of the following criteria:
• completion of two languages selected from group 1 with the award of a grade 3 or higher in both
• completion of one of the subjects from group 3 or group 4 in a language that is not the same as the candidate's nominated group 1 language.
The candidate must attain a grade 3 or higher in both the group 1 language and the subject from group 3 or 4.
