goal: to activate elderly people to read together
I had idea with my friends to form a book club for the elderly. We' re going to plan meetings and make some materials for our meetings as well (book surveys etc.) We have already done the shared word document where we will write about our project and I will reflect about my input in the future here.
Month's Project Plan: Starting a Book Club for the Elderly
Week 1:
Research and Select Books: Research books that may appeal to elderly participants, considering various genres, themes, and reading levels. Select a list of potential books for discussion.
Establish Club Guidelines: Develop guidelines for the book club, including meeting frequency, duration, location, and expectations for participation.
Secure Venue: Identify a suitable venue for hosting book club meetings, considering accessibility, comfort, and availability of amenities such as seating and refreshments.
Week 2:
Recruit Participants: Reach out to local senior centers, retirement communities, and community centers to recruit elderly participants interested in joining the book club. Advertise through flyers, social media, and word of mouth.
Set Meeting Schedule: Finalize the meeting schedule for the book club, taking into account participants' availability and preferences. Determine the frequency of meetings (e.g., monthly or biweekly) and establish a regular meeting day and time.
Plan Kickoff Event: Organize a kickoff event to introduce the book club to prospective members. Provide information about the club, discuss upcoming book selections, and encourage participation.
Week 3:
Day 1: Select First Book: Choose the first book for the book club's inaugural meeting. Consider books with universal themes, engaging narratives, and manageable length.
Gather Supplies: Acquire necessary supplies for book club meetings, including copies of the selected book, discussion guides, and any materials for activities or refreshments.
Prepare Discussion Questions: Develop a list of discussion questions and prompts related to the selected book to guide conversation during the first meeting.
Week 4:
Hold Inaugural Meeting: Host the first book club meeting, welcoming participants and introducing the selected book. Facilitate discussion using prepared questions and encourage members to share their thoughts and insights.
Solicit Feedback: After the inaugural meeting, solicit feedback from participants to assess their experience and gather suggestions for improvement. Use feedback to refine future meetings and enhance the book club experience.
Plan Next Meeting: Based on feedback and discussions during the inaugural meeting, select the next book for the club and plan the agenda for the next meeting.
Throughout the Month:
Promote Engagement: Encourage active participation and engagement among book club members by fostering a supportive and inclusive environment. Incorporate interactive activities, guest speakers, and themed events to enhance the book club experience.
Build Community: Foster a sense of community and camaraderie among book club members by providing opportunities for socializing, networking, and forming connections beyond book discussions.
Evaluate Progress: Continuously evaluate the progress and impact of the book club, monitoring attendance, participation levels, and overall satisfaction among members. Adjust strategies and activities as needed to optimize the club's effectiveness and success.
By following this month-long project plan, we can establish a vibrant and engaging book club for elderly participants, providing them with a stimulating and enjoyable literary experience.
