Number Bonds and Number Stories

Number bonds are frequently used in mathematics instruction in Singapore. Students learn to break numbers apart into part, part, whole. Students understand various ways to build numbers. Having a strong understanding of part, part, whole helps students when they begin addition and subtraction.

Jana Hazekamp writes about number bonds in her Why Before How book.

Number bonds help students see that numbers can be “broken” into pieces to make computation easier. With number bonds, students recognize the relationships between numbers through a written model that shows how the numbers are related.

Ten Frames

Ten frames are graphic tools that can be used to build number sense, help students gain "mental math" fluency, and to better understand how to use the math strategies.

Concrete, Pictorial, Abstract...Using the CPA Model

When teaching primary "maths" as it is called in Singapore, using the CPA model of instruction is beneficial. Students begin with manipulatives during a "maths" lesson as it is called in Singapore. They may use blocks, unifix cubes, counters, or anything similar. They may simultaneously draw pictures or they may draw pictures after they have had the opportunity to manipulative objects. Students move to the abstract stage after they have had concrete and pictorial representations during instruction.

"I do, We do, You do" Method of Teaching...Singapore Does it Well

Observing in Singapore's primary classrooms has allowed me many opportunities to observe this teaching strategy and I have seen it very consistently demonstrated. When teaching a mathematics lesson, teachers introduce a skill. They model it very directly with explicit instruction. After this modeling, the teachers present a math problem and students engage in solving it with the teacher. Once both steps are complete, students are given independent work to complete.

Place Value...A Foundation for Mathematics Success

Teachers in Singapore have shared with me time and again that lessons on number bonds early in the primary years of education truly helps their students with place value. Students can begin to see the relationships between numbers and they have values. They also understand there is a difference between digits and numbers.

Singapore and Model Drawing

My time in Singapore has been focused on Primary One and Primary Two with specific target areas of place value and equivalency. While I have observed less model drawing due to my lower grades focus, it is a significant aspect of Singapore's Maths instruction.
