The VIOLIN is arguably the most well known instrument in the orchestra. The violin is the smallest instrument in the string section, and makes the highest sounds.
The violin reads the treble clef because it plays such high pitched notes. There are so many violins in an orchestra, they are usually split into two sections so they are not overpowering. The 1st violin section usually plays the melody part, while the 2nd violin section usually plays more harmony parts.
The violin is sometimes confused for the Viola, which is a larger string instrument. Click here to learn more about the differences between the violin and the viola.
