We will study a variety of developmental theories that will help us understand why young children act the way that they do. We will also learn about the enormous role that these early years have on a child's development and ultimately who they become later in life. Students will run a preschool two days per week throughout the semester, which will give them a hands-on opportunity to observe and apply what we are learning in class.

This course is designed for self-motivated students. The curriculum will be delivered online via synchronous and asynchronous lessons. Students will still however help lead the preschool lab and will also participate in a service learning experience at Edina’s Early Learning Center (students will help in one of the classrooms at the ELC once per week throughout the semester during our block period). This course is for students who have already taken Child Psychology and want to delve deeper into its content. We will focus on early childhood education and related careers that involve working with children from birth to age 5. Course topics include: career paths in early childhood education; the history, theory, and foundations of early childhood education; principles of child development and developmental theories; developmentally appropriate activities for young children; developmentally appropriate practices of guidance and discipline.

This course will be the same content as the face to face model but offered online via synchronous and asynchronous lessons. All work is researched and completed online. Students will learn the components of managing financial resources responsibly. Topics of study include establishing income, post-secondary decisions, understanding pay checks, budgeting, saving, banking, investing money, analyzing loans and credit, financial security, taxes, and risk management. Independent living topics, such as buying a car and renting a home, will also be researched. Students interested in the online version of this course must be willing to take the time to independently study the content as needed.
