All Coaches CER and Rules Interpretation Meeting Requirements

In addition to the head coaching statute, all head coaches and all assistant coaches need to complete all four chapters on Continuing Education Requirement (CER) and complete the online Rules Interpretation meeting for your sport.

Coaches need to go to the MSHSL Coach's Clipboard and complete Chapters 1-4 on the CER (good for 3 years) along with the online Rules Interpretation.

Debate, Speech, and One Act Play coaches/directors must compete CER’s 1, 2 and 3.

MSHSL Head Coaching Statute

MN State Statute 122A.33 states:

Notwithstanding section 122A.15, subdivision 1, a school district may employ as a head varsity coach of an interscholastic sport at its secondary school a person who does not have a license as head varsity coach of interscholastic sports and who does not have a bachelor's degree if:

(1) in the judgment of the school board, the person has the knowledge and experience necessary to coach the sport;

(2) can verify completion of six quarter credits, or the equivalent, or 60 clock hours of instruction in first aid and the care and prevention of athletic injuries; and

(3) can verify completion of a coaching methods or theory course.

So what does this mean to you?

There are only two ways a person can become a head varsity coach of interscholastic sports in Minnesota.

1. A person who wishes to qualify as a head varsity coach of interscholastic sports in a Minnesota school:

a. must have a bachelor's degree

AND

b. must have a license issued by the Minnesota Department of Education to be a head varsity coach of interscholastic sports;

OR

2. A person who wishes to qualify as a head varsity coach of interscholastic sport in a Minnesota school, but who does not meet number 1 above:

a. must have affirmation from the school board that the person is knowledgeable and has the necessary experiences to become the head varsity coach of a sport:

AND

b. must be able to verify that the person has completed six (6) quarter credits, or equivalent, or 60 clock hours of instruction in two (2) specific areas: (i) first aid and (ii) care and prevention of athletic injuries;

AND

c. must verify the completion of a coaching methods or theory course.

So how do you qualify for the statute to be a varsity head coach?

You meet #1 if you are a certified teacher and coach as licensed by the MN Dept. of Education (look at your MN teaching license, if coaching is listed on the license you meet the requirement this way).

You meet #2a if EHS offered you the head coaching position and you accepted it. You meet #2b and #2c by college course work or by taking either ASEP (American Sports Education Program) or MNHCC (Minnesota Head Coaches Course--this is run by the MSHSL).

If you don't qualify by #1 or #2, go to the MSHSL Coaches Clipboard. In your profile it should say that you need to enroll in the MNHCC course ($170). The class is an in person 6 hour course and requires some additional computer modules on the MSHSL website. Once you are done, send a copy of your certificate to the Activities Office and you will meet the state statute.

Summer Coaching Waiver

In order to coach students from EHS who have participated at the varsity, JV, sophomore or B squad level during the summer. Coaches must complete the MSHSL Summer Coaching Waiver Request online. To complete the form, go to the MSHSL Coaches Clipboard. The electronic form is under "Coaching Requirements Data." After completing the form, your waiver will be approved by the Activities Office.
