First Aid, CPR/AED

First Aid, CPR/AED: Tobey Saracino

There are two types of CPR/AED opportunities for students at Edgemont:

  1. The first is a two-day assembly teaching basic CPR compressions and AED. This two-day assembly will be for all students 7-12th grade giving them the credit they need towards the NY State Regulation for graduation. No certifications are available for this course.

  2. The second option is the First Aid, CPR/AED Semester course available for 9th-12th grade with more advanced knowledge and skills. This is a full semester course that counts as PE credit and gives the students the opportunity to become certified at the conclusion of the year.

Please see more information below for both options.

CPR/AED Assembly:

The New York State Board of Regents approved a new Regulation requiring the teaching of hands-only CPR and AED training for all New York State Students in Senior High School prior to graduation. The adopted regulation went into effect October 7th, 2015, meaning all students will be required to complete this training to graduate High School.

Each year we will hold a two-day assembly covering these skills. Our goal is to expose the students to these skills year after year so they get the knowledge and the practice needed to retain the skills in case of an emergency.

The following skills will be taught:

1. How to recognize an emergency

2. How to activate EMS (Emergency Medical System) to get more medical personnel

3. How to properly give hands-only CPR

4. How to properly administer an AED

In addition to the lecturing process, the teacher will use videos and American Red Cross books to support the knowledge being taught to the students. Once the content knowledge has been taught to the students, they will be asked to attempt the skills in a practical setting using mannequins (CPR, AED) and volunteers (First Aid). These types of teaching methods foster ample learning opportunities for all types of learners.

Evaluation Procedures:

Students will be evaluated through a few different methods. They will be tested on their content knowledge via a written exam. Once they have passed the written exam they will need to perform the skills in a practical setting using mannequins (CPR/AED) and volunteers (First Aid). All skills will need to be performed within the outlined regulations of the American Red Cross to pass and receive certification.
