Professional Learning: K-3 Literacy

Rationale: Utah charter schools have much to celebrate in the impact each has on student learning. Yet early literacy scores do not always reflect the excellent work occurring in Utah charter schools. This is a key data point in our work as educators, appreciating the known link between early literacy and success in school and in life! Participants have an opportunity to understand the early literacy pillars and explore how their practices as teachers bring literacy instruction to life in order to improve student learning.

Learning Intention: Participants will solidify their understanding of the scientific approach to early literacy pillars to strengthen literacy fluency for students.

Success Criteria: Participants will know they're successful when they:

  • understand the science behind the Pillars of Literacy

  • explain the five Pillars of Reading

  • develop a bank of strategies for each Pillar of Reading

  • determine how to use Teacher Clarity as a mechanism to link literacy standards to effective literacy instruction
