We offer two options for Civics+Data curriculum resources to support educators:
Full Semester Course: A comprehensive, eight-unit, semester-long Civics+Data course. Students begin by learning how data can tell compelling stories and support arguments. They explore the purpose of government, compare political systems, and engage in simulations that incorporate data-driven decision-making. Units cover foundational aspects of U.S. government, the role of local governments, and the impact of political parties. Additionally, students examine the complexities of gerrymandering and develop skills in storytelling with data, culminating in a final civics project that integrates all the course's key concepts.
Integration Modules: A collection of six flexible, stand-alone modules that can be seamlessly integrated into existing social studies courses. These modules guide students through the process of exploring, using, and managing data to support civics projects. Students learn how to tell stories with data, identify their data needs, and locate useful datasets. Students learn to create their own data through surveys, organize it in tools like Google Sheets, and visualize the data in meaningful ways to effectively communicate their findings.
All Civics+Data materials have been developed and piloted by high school educators in Burlington and Chelsea, MA. These resources are available in easily accessible Google Docs format, allowing for convenient downloading, copying, and customization to suit local educational needs.
