Last Edition of the School Year
By Mrs. Mercer
That’s a wrap on our editions for the 2024-2025 school year.
We want to thank the terrific team at Midwestern Newspapers for giving us the space in the Wingham Advance Times to highlight all of the educational, interesting, and fun things that were happening at Madill. From sports, to trips, to guest speakers, and special events, we loved sharing the news with the student body and the community.
We look forward to doing it again in the fall.
Students Participate in Jill of All Trades Event
By Rowan Gaspirc
Conestoga College hosted the Jill of All Trades event on Wednesday, May 28. Jill of All Trades is an initiative designed to encourage young women in grades 9-12 to explore careers in skilled trades and technologies by providing hands-on workshops, mentorship opportunities, and a safe environment for students to discover the potential of these fields.
F.E. Madill was able to send three students with tech teacher Mr. McMahon: Sydney Martin, Zoey Collins, and Rowan Gaspirc. It was a great opportunity for these students to try out different trades, learn about experiences, and build confidence.
The day started off with time for snacks, talking to people at different booths, and getting new supplies such as a JOAT backpack and shirt. Then, everyone got to participate in three different trades. In each workshop the students learned the ins and outs of the trade, and then got to make something. The day ended with some keynote speakers, who stressed the importance of women pursuing the trades and following their dreams.
Forever A Madill Mustang
By Mrs. Mercer
Our Madill family lost one of our own last week.
Former business and math teacher Laurie (Fischer) Raynard, who retired in June of 2022, passed away after a brief battle with cancer.
Mrs. Raynard spent most of her teaching career at Madill, forming strong bonds with her colleagues and students.
“She was a wonderful lady, an awesome teacher who had so much hope in me! I went on to do business work because of her... always a pleasant person,” one of her former students shared.
Others commented on her fun sense of humour and heart of gold.
“Laurie was one of my favourite teachers at F.E. Madill and never failed to make me laugh. She was a very important mentor to me—especially in mathematics, which I struggled with until I was in her class. I owe her so much for that. She was such an amazing teacher and person.”
Laurie will not only be fondly remembered by her former students, but by the many friends she made in education, who will miss her gentle, kind spirit and beautiful soul. Always giving, she had a way of making everyone feel cared for, heard, understood, and supported. She was up for any adventure, loved her children, her furbabies, and her friends, and was creative and crafty.
She made a positive difference in many, many lives over the years, and will be greatly missed.
Art Extravaganza
By Lillian Beyersbergen-Oakes and Lily Verbeek
On May 27, students from F.E. Madill and LDSS went on an informative and amazing trip to the McMichael Art Gallery in Vaughan, Ontario.
The trip - planned by Madill art teacher Mr. Andrew - was a packed day of exploring the gallery, painting outdoors, and ending with a visit to the Vaughan Mills Mall.
The McMichael Art Gallery is an eye-catching place to visit with many different styles of art. The informative tour guides explained many of the paintings in the gallery and the history behind them.
Students had the opportunity to paint outdoors; many of the finished paintings had colourful and distinctive designs, showing off the students’ talent, personal styles, and inspiration from the paintings in the gallery.
Afterwards, students enjoyed a self-guided tour around the museum, talking about their favourite art pieces, visiting the gift shop, and taking photos of their experience.

Track Wrap Up
By Alaina Scheurwater
The FE Madill track team had a great season this year. Thirty-one athletes competed at the Huron Perth qualifying meet, and 32 personal best events were achieved by the teammates.
Darren Prentice won the award as the Huron Perth Junior Boys’ Champion with first place finishes in all three of his individual events.
Twenty-three athletes from the FE team had a top six finish at Huron Perth, which allowed them to qualify for the WOSSAA championship meet.
At WOSSAA, ten athletes achieved personal best performances, and four athletes finished in the top 6 of their event, sending them to OFSAA West Regionals (Tyler Burns, Taylor Gibson, Caleb Koch and Darren Prentice).
At Regionals, Tyler Burns and Caleb Koch both had the privilege of qualifying for OFSAA. Tyler improved his personal best in discus by 2 meters, while Caleb improved his personal best in discus by 3 meters. Congratulations to Caleb for placing twelfth and to Tyler for placing fourth at OFSAA.
The track team is already looking forward to next season and is encouraging students to join. No matter your experience level, the coaches work on teaching you new skills and helping you achieve your goals and beat your own personal best results.
The track team would like to say a big thank you to all of the coaches for volunteering their time and efforts to support the team.
Spring Arts Night
By Lydia Jefferson
On June 12, the Madill Art Department hosted its Spring Arts Night. It was a night full of creativity and wonderful performances.
Many beautiful art pieces by Madill students were on display, and there were some incredibly talented live painters at the event.
During the show, there were performances from both the concert band and the rock band. Madill’s drama club also performed. Several students sang beautiful covers of a few songs, there was a dance number, and there was a special surprise dance performed by Aria LeRoux and Rowan Gaspirc.
A huge thank you goes out to the staff and students who helped make this event a success.
Drama Trip to Stratford
By Aria LeRoux
Ms. Caesar’s drama class recently took a field trip to see “As You Like It” at the Stratford Festival, and it was an unforgettable day. The bus ride there was full of energy, with music blasting and everyone singing along.
Upon arrival, we had time to wander through Stratford’s beautifully manicured gardens and enjoy some playful moments on the park playground, perfect warm up before the show.
The play itself was an incredible experience, witty, heartfelt, and beautifully staged. The opportunity to attend the festival was truly amazing. For many students, it was their first live Shakespeare production.
We’re so grateful for the chance to see professional theatre up close. Huge thanks to everyone who helped make the trip happen!
