Madill Girls Hockey Team Travels To Europe
By Aria LeRoux
From December 28, 2024, to January 8, 2025, the Madill girls' hockey team embarked on an exciting 12-day journey through Austria, Germany, and the Czech Republic. They played five games, attended two European Pro League matches, and experienced stunning sights throughout the trip.
The team played against top competition in Austria and the Czech Republic, testing their skills internationally. They also attended two professional hockey games, providing the players with a front-row experience of some of the best hockey in the world.
Off the ice, the girls embraced Europe's rich history and beauty. New Year’s Eve in Vienna was unforgettable. They joined locals for a lively celebration, zooming around in bumper cars and watching fireworks illuminate the night sky.
A standout moment was exploring the Salzburg Salt Mine, where the group traveled underground to uncover Austria’s fascinating mining history. They also visited iconic landmarks, including the incredible Benedictine Monastery.
The trip wasn’t just about fun; it also included sobering moments. A visit to the Dachau concentration camp brought the team face-to-face with history, leaving them with heavy hearts and a deeper understanding of the past.
"This was an experience of a lifetime. We covered so much in 12 days, seeing a lot," said Mr. Moffat, one of the team coaches. "The girls were busy and there was very little downtime. The Salt Mine was probably their favorite. Visiting Dachau was heart-wrenching but an important experience for them."
Generous community support made the trip possible. Egg Farmers of Ontario provided team jackets, Milk Producers of Ontario donated backpacks, and NWMO supplied team jerseys. Countless other sponsors also contributed, showcasing the incredible backing from the community.
From intense games and cultural explorations to heartfelt moments of reflection, the Madill girls’ hockey team returned home with more than just memories; they brought back lessons and friendships that will last a lifetime.
Living Library Coming Soon
By Lily Verbeek and Lydia Jefferson
F.E. Madill Madill students are looking forward to seeing all the living books at the Living Library on the morning of February 26th. Taking place in the FEMSS library, this event gives many people a chance to show others their culture, to celebrate differences, and to encourage understanding.
Living books are the volunteers and students that come and share their stories - some about where they're from and what it was like to live in that country, others about unique experiences they have had - to the students and staff at F.E. Madill. Some of these living books will be students from F.E. Madill, representatives from the Wingham Historical Society, Kyle Critch - recently retired from the armed forces - and many more!
The Living Library allows students to connect with others in their school and community that they don't interact with normally. The Living Library encourages tolerance, celebrating our differences, and understanding people with different experiences from a wide range of cultural, social, and lifestyle backgrounds. It is a way to make individuals' experiences more openly known about and to expand the knowledge of others.
Students and staff at Madill are looking forward to the Living Library and are excited to connect with new students and people in the community.
Students of the Month!
The Faces Behind The Arts Night
by Charis VanderKlippe
Welcome to the first 'Student of the Month' announcement! In every Mustang Messenger, we will be picking one or more outstanding students to be highlighted for their efforts. Do you attend Madill? If so, get ready!
This month is an exciting one: On Thursday, December 19, students welcomed the community for the Madill Winter Show, organized and run by the Arts Department. The purpose of the event was to raise money for the arts department, which has been recently affected by budget cuts.
The night made it possible to display the incredible art and hard work of youth in our community, even allowing an auction for the handcrafted pieces. Three students (Oakley Saari, Juan Villegas Rodriguez, and Paige Kitchen) stepped up for live painting during the event, working away to showcase their creativity in front of the crowd. Saari's painting, "Mandela of Christmas", sold for $90- with the total amount raised around $300. Such great initiative from these excellent artists!
Thanks for checking in, and make sure to stop by next month for another glimpse at the hidden greatness in our community.
