Just some of the areas of the Policies and Procedures Manual to be aware of:

4.3 School-based Assessment - College Responsibilities in general and specifically:

4.3.8 Attendance/Participation

(I have often shared this with my students at the beginning of each unit to remind them classwork matters greatly despite their grades/scores being based on assessment only)

It is expected that students will attend and participate in all scheduled classes/contact time/structured learning activities for the units in which they are enrolled, unless there is due cause and adequate documentary evidence is provided. Any student whose attendance falls below 90% of the scheduled classes/contact time or 90% participation in structured learning activities in a unit, without having due cause with adequate documentary evidence will be deemed to have voided the unit. However, the principal has the right to exercise discretion in special circumstances if satisfactory documentation is supplied.

Colleges are responsible for implementing procedures to monitor participation in structured learning activities.

4.4.3 Types of Special Provisions

4.4.4 Equitable Assessment and Special Provision Decision Process

Summary of Special Provisions:

  • Modifications to assessment conditions

  • Modifications to the task or alternate assessment

  • Exemption (Estimate)- this is treated as an adjustment in ACS and should be used as a last resort.

In most instances the classroom teacher does not make the determination regarding special considerations. Each school will usually have a team of people that support students who are in need of special considerations and have strict, consistent and equitable guidelines on their implementations.

Section 7 Review and Appeals Procedures

These procedures are quite multi-layered but clear. Below is a diagram that might help clarify the process for a student when querying an assessment result.
