"Books worms will rule the world...as soon as we finish one more chapter"

Welcome to the book review page where you can read about recommended books to help guide your reading selections.

Obviously as a Librarian I love reading!

I am hoping that this blog will give the students of Lyneham High School a place to read book reviews of the books found in the school Library, sharing my thoughts about what I am reading and making recommendations for others.

I enjoy reading historical fiction, fantasy and mystery/suspense stories and I will try most books.........but I am not too keen on horror stories......I don't much like being scared!

From time to time there will be a guest blogger and if you would like to be a guest reviewer then please call in to the Library and discuss options with the Librarian.

Book Review One: The Ranger's Apprentice

One of my most favourite series in our library is the Ranger's Apprentice by John Flanagan. I eagerly awaited as each novel in the series was released, looking forward to the next adventures of the small group of friends. Some reviewers feel the book/series is predictable and not well written, and while everyone has a valid opinion, I would like to say, I enjoyed escaping into the medieval style world and the mysteries the characters find themselves embroiled in. The spin off series, the Brotherband Chronicles is also enjoyable to read, where the adventures of the Heron Brotherband uses brotherly comradeship to face and overcome many challenges. John Flanagan has since begun writing the The Royal Ranger and following the same pattern as the two series before it, the adventures continues with a new generation, entwining characters from both the original Ranger's Apprentice and Brotherband series. All theses series are a great read for teenagers and adults alike and a joy to read, with old favorite characters making an appearance across the three different series, interweaving the stories together.

Book Review 2: An Ember in the Ashes by Sabaa Tahir

If you enjoy fast paced action packed story telling then this is the book for you. An Ember in the Ashes by Sabaa Tahir is a compelling, captivating and exciting read. The characters are all swept up in a whirlwind of more often than not shocking events, that send them spiralling through the merciless fantasy world they inhabit. There is tension from unrequited love behind the scenes while the characters attempt to navigate a nasty world filled with evil. It is at times heart wrenching when your favourite characters are left reeling from shocks you don't see coming, leaving you wondering how much more can they take, but totally immersed in the story to keep reading on to see what happens next.

At first I thought this was not the book for me and seemed a bit weird at the start...but only a few pages in and I could not put it down. The good news is the story does not end there, two more books have been written with another curently on it's way. I can't wait! This book will appeal to young adults and adult readers and I think the series is a 'must read'.
