Dear Duffy School Community,
Welcome to Week 3, Term 3.
It’s hard to believe we’re already in Week 3 — the term is certainly moving quickly! We began with a very productive pupil-free day, where staff engaged in rich professional learning, including support for our Unit of Inquiry with Dan Heap from the Academy of Future Skills, and writing development with our own expert, Catherine Nash.
We’ve already celebrated some key events, including French Day, and we’re now looking forward to the upcoming Winter Walk to School, Science Week, and the highlight of any school year — Book Week!
This year’s Book Week theme is “Book an Adventure”, promising a whimsical and fun celebration. We can’t wait to see everyone get into the spirit at our annual Book Week Parade — it’s always a much-loved event across our school community!
See information below in LIBRARY SECTION.
Our Limelight preparations are also well underway, and excitement is building among our performers. Students have been out and about exploring learning beyond the classroom. Recent and upcoming excursions include the Combined Band Excursion, Year 5’s visit to MOAD, and Year 4 and Kindergarten’s visits to Questacon — fantastic opportunities to bring science and inquiry to life.
Looking ahead to Week 6, our Kindergarten students will lead an assembly focused on our school value of inclusiveness. In conjunction with this, our Cultural Integrity Group will be highlighting and celebrating the integration of authentic Indigenous content across our preschool and school settings — an important and valued part of our teaching and learning.
We’re also excited to welcome families into classrooms for Learning Journeys in Week 9. These will be held on Tuesday 16 September from 3:00–4:00pm and Wednesday 17 September from 8:30–9:00am, providing a wonderful opportunity to connect with your child’s learning and classroom environment.
Finally, our wonderful Year 6 leaders will be hosting Market Day on Wednesday 17 September — a much-anticipated event for our whole school community.
We look forward to a rewarding and engaging term ahead.
Warm regards
Katie, Arilia, Sarah, Fiona and Julian.
Celebrating Learning at Duffy.
Thank you to everyone who supported our School Review last term. The process was extremely positive, highlighting our strong sense of community, inclusive practices, and commitment to student learning. In response, we’ve developed a two-page document titled “Communicating Together About Your Child’s Learning” which outlines how we celebrate and share learning here at Duffy. We look forward to continuing this important partnership with you. Today your eldest child will be bringing home a copy of this document.
Our recent French Day was a fun celebration of French culture, creativity and cuisine! Students rotated through five different activities that brought French traditions and history to life. They designed beautiful bookmarks inspired by famous French artists, crafted traditional bilboquets (cup and ball) toys, created colourful stained glass window art, constructed impressive Eiffel Tower models, and contributed to our very own Duffy Cave Wall, inspired by the prehistoric art of the Lascaux Caves.
A highlight of the day was the delicious French lunch featuring fresh baguettes and croissants. A huge merci to the Stromlo High School canteen staff for preparing so many orders – your support was invaluable!
It was wonderful to see our students embracing the spirit of the day, many dressed in French colours or creative costumes. Thank you to all the staff and families who helped make the day such a success!
We are getting ready to celebrate Book Week at Duffy Primary! The theme this year is Book an Adventure, and students have been reading and sharing the books that made the notables lists, so we are ready and excited to see which books win the Book of the Year awards.
Families are invited to join us on Wednesday 20th from 9:00am for Drop Everything and Read, followed by our Book Week Parade from 9:15am (9:20am start).
Come a little earlier and stop in at the Book Fair in the library while you are here, open from 8:30am Monday to Wednesday (18-20/8).
But we want EVERY week to be book week at Duffy Primary. As such, our school library is now open before school from 8:30am (as well as lunchtimes) for those looking for some extra reading time. It's been great to see students with their heads in books (and maybe also enjoying the warmth of the library).
We have also started a Book Buddy program for students in years 3-6 to be certified as library helpers. To gain certification, students have been coming to the library some lunchtimes and showing they know how our books are organised, how to shelve and find books, and how to use the library system to help with returning books. Book Buddies who come and help regularly will be invited to watch a book movie at the end of each term, and also help to choose new books for our library collection!
On Fridays, we have Buddy Reading for all students, with students from upper grades reading to students in lower grades. We can't wait for the weather to improve so we can move outside and enjoy Buddy Reading under a tree.
Year 4 students have been practising improving their vocabulary. They have been unpacking the meaning of words read in Storm Boy and trying to apply it to their own writing.
The ground stretched out around him, the green of the grass dotted with pink, white and yellow flowers. The grass was soft and warm under his back like a big green cushion. He rolled over slowly letting the warmth envelop him. He was perfectly at ease with the world around him. - Jesse 4 Green
In writing, year 4 have been focussing on information texts. Students have been thinking about their organisation and revising their pieces of writing to try and include paragraphs, heading, subheadings, introductions and conclusions. Year 4 have written multiple quick drafts and are looking forward to editing and publishing their informative texts soon.
Students have been working on their multiplication and division strategies and fact fluency. Some strategies year 4 have been using to solve division word problems include using the inverse operation, partitioning, grouping and sharing. Each week, they have also been engaging in maths lessons about time and solving time duration problems. Students have been using numberlines, partitioning and vertical algorithms to solve time duration problems.
In Inquiry Year 4 have been using atlases, researching temperature, rainfall and vegetation to compare their chosen country within South America or Africa to Australia.

Let’s recognise the people who help our schools shine.
Each year, the Directorate surveys all parents and carers, school staff and students in years 4 to 12 about their experience of public education. The 2025 School Satisfaction & Climate Survey will be available online from 15 August to 5 September. The survey results will help us to continue to make quality informed decisions about how to improve our school. No personal identifying information will be provided to any school or college.
For each child in their family who attends an ACT public school, parents and carers will receive:
A letter about the student survey outlining the reasons for collection and privacy provision for the data; and
An email about the parent survey, including a unique link to access the survey. Genuine survey invitation emails will have the title "The 2025 School Satisfaction & Climate Survey is now open!" and will be sent from EDU Surveys with a 'from' address EDUSurveys@act.gov.au
If you do not receive the survey invitation, please check your Junk email folder first then contact your school. If you do not have an email listed with the school, please contact the Front Office.
The Parents and Carers Survey is available online in 13 languages including Arabic, Chinese, Hindi, Korean, Urdu, Vietnamese, Punjabi, Bengali, Spanish, Telugu, French and Italian. Respondents can select their preferred language when they start the survey. A shortened paper-version of the Parents and Carers Survey is also available in the following 5 languages: Dari, Dinka, Farsi, Karen and Mon. These surveys are available at the Front Office.
For the results to reflect the opinions of our whole school community, we need as many parents and carers, staff and students as possible to complete the survey. Your feedback is important, and we hope you will take part

New sun protection guidelines for all ACT public schools will begin from 1 August 2025.
ACT public schools will move from a ‘no hat, no play’ to a ‘no hat, play in the shade’ approach from August through May in a move to encourage year-round sun/UV protection whilst continuing to promote active play and physical activity. Hat wearing is encouraged during the months of June and July.
The change brings the ACT in line with other schools across Australia and follows consultation with the Canberra Council ACT. The approach balances students’ risk of UV exposure without hats with the need for physical activity.
Our school will continue to have SPF50 or 50+ Sun Protection Factor (SPF) sunscreen available.
The sun protection guidelines apply to our students, staff and volunteers.
The policy was updated in consultation with the Cancer Council ACT.
Read the Sun (UV) Protection policy. Please contact the front office if you have any questions.
A big thank you to our wonderful P&C for purchasing new soccer goals for our oval! These were kindly delivered and assembled by Fran H (mum to Alexander and Nina) and are now ready for our students to enjoy.
The goals are lightweight and movable, which means we’ll be able to place them where they’re most needed across the term. They’re already proving popular and will provide lots of fun and active play for our students.
We’re very grateful for the continued support of our P&C and the positive impact their contributions make across our school.

School Uniform
The School Board endorses the wearing of uniform as it is part of the school ethos of helping to create a sense of belonging and pride in the school and so engender a positive school spirit. Students at Duffy Primary School are encouraged to wear their school uniform or school colours each day.
Students must be in uniform when attending excursions or outside events; this is to ensure their safety. When parents complete permission notes for excursions or school events, they are acknowledging this requirement.
