Dear Parents/Carers,
It was a joy to celebrate all things music at our annual CRESCENDO CONCERT yesterday. We were thrilled to publicly congratulate each and every one of the musicians for their dedication to practicing at home and consistently attending band and choir rehearsals. Their commitment is truly inspiring, and it’s clear that all their hard work is helping them to grow as musicians.
A special thank you to the Year 6 students involved in our ensembles, who performed for the last time as Duffy School students. We wish them all the best in their future musical endeavours and any upcoming musical ensembles they may be a part of.
Music has the power to bring us together, lift our spirits, and help us share our feelings. It connects people from all walks of life and makes the world a better place. We are incredibly fortunate to have a talented staff—Mrs. Brown, Mrs. Morell, and Miss Moore—who not only excel as musicians personally but also serve as passionate advocates for music here at Duffy.
Preschool and Kindergarten 2025 Information Sessions
Over the past few weeks, we’ve had the pleasure of welcoming our preschoolers to 'big school' for transition sessions as they prepare for their start in 2025. In addition to these sessions, we have held information sessions for both our 2025 Preschool cohort and Kindergarten students. These important information sessions are the first step in establishing a strong partnership between the school and parents/carers. If you were unable to attend either of these sessions, please contact the Front Office to arrange to collect your 'pack'.
Planning for 2025
Planning for 2025 is in full flight. To assist this planning, if your child is not returning to Duffy Primary School in 2025, please let our front office know ASAP via phone 61422510 or via email duffyps@ed.act.edu.au
Volunteers Thank You Morning Tea
Please join us on Tuesday, 26th November at 11am in the school staffroom for a special gathering to express our gratitude to all the wonderful volunteers who support our school community. Whether you’ve volunteered once this year or on a regular basis, we want to say thank you for your time, dedication, and support. We look forward to seeing you there!
Warm Regards,
Katie, Arilia, Fiona and Sarah

This term Year 3 have been exploring the creative world. Our Big Idea is “People communicate through art in different ways”
We began with an excursion to AIATSIS to explore the works of artist, Jimmy Pike. We considered contemporary and traditional First Nations artforms and discussed how a top-down view is common to specific regions, before creating our own artworks to represent a place that is special to us. To understand our big idea we have been experimenting with different visual arts mediums (including paint-brush textas, oil pastels, acrylic paint and watercolour paints). We have been writing poetry to communicate an emotion or feeling and will create an artwork using a medium of our choice to illustrate our idea. In addition to different mediums, we have explored different styles of art and techniques. We have used natural products for printing and created graffiti-style name plates to display our ongoing work.
We have also been privileged to have Dan Heap, from the Academy of Future skills, come in and teach us how to create digital art. He has also taught us how to program micro bits. These micro bits which can be attached to a frame with LED lights. The students have programmed them to create different colours and patterns which will be combined with our poetry and art.
During maths lessons we have been exploring area and perimeter. We learned that the word perimeter is made up of the morphemes peri (meaning around) and meter (meaning to measure). After calculating the area and perimeter of come quadrilaterals we have used the squares in our maths book to create a pixelated version of our names and found the area and perimeter of these shapes!
We are concluding our Book Clubs and have enjoyed sharing our ideas and opinions about our texts. We have been sharing our understandings about how authors communicate the location of their story and how this changes throughout a text.
During writing lessons we have been creating poetry to communicate an emotion or experience. We have explored examples of poetry including structures and patterns with rhyme and syllable and examples of free verse where text does not always follow our usual ‘rules’ for sentences and making sense. We enjoy publishing using our chromebooks and are learning to use different features such as text indenting to create a professional layout.
As part of our efforts in becoming more sustainable, we are introducing ‘Waste Free Wednesdays” for the duration of this term.
During Sustainability lessons this week, our students have been busy creating posters that promote this challenge. This initiative will encourage all of us to think about how much rubbish we are creating and try to reduce it. Thanks in advance for your support.

Free Period Products Available at ACT Schools
All ACT public schools are stocked with free period products so students can access them no matter their circumstances. This is part of the ACT Government’s commitment to ensuring students feel comfortable and confident within our schools.
Free period products are available at our school’s front office. Students can access them at any time by talking to our helpful front office staff.
Sanitary pads are available from the front offices of primary schools, while pads and tampons are available at the front offices of high schools and colleges.
Because menstruation is a fact of life, we believe free access to period products should be too.

School Uniform
The School Board endorses the wearing of uniform as it is part of the school ethos of helping to create a sense of belonging and pride in the school and so engender a positive school spirit. Students at Duffy Primary School are encouraged to wear their school uniform or school colours each day.
Students must be in uniform when attending excursions or outside events; this is to ensure their safety. When parents complete permission notes for excursions or school events, they are acknowledging this requirement.
Term 4 is here and 2025 is fast approaching! Now is a good time to consider getting uniforms and avoid the back to school last minute rush.
A rack of uniform items has been taken to pre-school for families to see what is available to purchase from the uniform shop.
You can purchase uniforms through:
flexi schools, place your orders by Thursday 5 December to receive uniforms this year. Any orders placed after that time will be held over to 2025.

We are seeking your support to address a growing concern: the inappropriate behaviours of some students on public transport. Unfortunately, these behaviours have escalated, becoming offensive and even violent at times, impacting other passengers and bus drivers.
As members of our community, bus drivers and passengers deserve to be treated with kindness and respect. We all have a role to play in ensuring the safety and comfort of everyone using public transport.
At school, we will be reminding students of the expectations for travelling on buses and light rail and we kindly ask you to have these important conversations at home as well. Here are a few key behaviours to discuss with your young person:
· Be polite and listen to the driver or transport officer.
· Show respect to the driver and other passengers - inappropriate language or physical violence is never acceptable.
· Remember to tap on and pay for your trip*
· Look after the bus or light rail vehicle - avoid leaving rubbish or causing damage, and hand in any lost items.
· Avoid disruptive behaviour - eating, drinking, and making loud noises can disturb others.
· Be considerate - give up your seat to someone who needs it more, such as an elderly person, someone who is pregnant, or someone with a disability.
Anyone behaving inappropriately on public transport may be asked to leave, and ACT Policing may be contacted.
Together, by reinforcing these expectations at school and at home, we can ensure a safe, respectful, and pleasant journey for all.
Thank you for your cooperation and support in this matter. For more information on public transport etiquette, please visit the Transport Canberra website.
Help Us Create a better Education Directorate Website Experience
Share your thoughts on the Education Directorate website. This website has general information on education in the ACT and is where you go to enrol in ACT public schools. It is different to your school’s website.
Help us create a better website experience by completing a short 5-minute survey before Friday 30 August 2024.

With more ways to pay, you can choose what works best for you and your family!
The switchover to MyWay+ is expected later this year. Until then, students should continue to use their current MyWay card or a paper ticket from a ticket vending machine to pay for travel on Transport Canberra bus and light rail services. You can also:
• Ensure your child’s MyWay card is registered to protect the balance. Transport Canberra can only process refunds and transfer credits for registered MyWay cards.
• Sign up to Transport Canberra’s weekly e-news for regular updates.
• Connect with Transport Canberra on social media. For more information on MyWay+ visit Transport Canberra – MyWay+.
The next major phase for MyWay+ will start from Friday 20 September ahead of the next generation ticketing system going live this November. To get ready for the new ticketing system, the old equipment will need to be removed and new MyWay+ validators installed in both buses and along the light rail alignment.
As a result:
travel will be free from 20 September
NXTBUS will not be available during this transition period.
