Freshman Checklist
Parents - Step by step, you can help your student make informed decisions about his or her education, do well academically, learn about colleges or trade schools, and find the best possible opportunities for after high school. The following is a checklist designed to help you and your student throughout the Freshman year. The loist speaks directly to your student, although he or she may need your help.
MAY-JUNE
Consider what courses you will take including both core classes and electives.
Review your Four Year Plan developed at your middle school.
Visit the SCHS and SCHS Guidance Office websites.
Familiarize yourself with SCHS graduation requirements and courses for all upcoming years.
Attend Freshman Orientation to help you get comfortable with the school setting and teachers.
Develop a list of colleges or trade schools you are interested in; Learn admission requirements.

FALL SEMESTER
Start a pattern of hard work and studying; Learn to communicate with teachers and develop organization skills.
Make sure you are in appropriate level classes -too rigorous and too easy both lead to problems.
Get to know your school counselor; Discuss post high school plans.
Look into joining clubs, organizations, sports...: Get a complete list form the student handbook.
Start looking into community service opportunities. Keep a file to log your hours for verification.

SPRING SEMESTER
Review your Four Year Plan and begin looking into core and elective classes for next year.
Review your course selection process with your counselor during the registration process.
Investigate the GBC dual credit program.
Start to think about your summer plans - consider internships, jobs, or volunteer opportunities.
SUMMER
Enjoy it! Relax a bit.
Read books, journals, magazines...anything that appeals to you.
Consider visiting a college or university that is on your list - Being there makes a difference.
