Inequity in Graduation Requirements
It has always been apparent to me that there is an inequity in the graduation requirement. The PE requirement makes it so that athletes can not experience other types of classes and activities. As a result, these communities are not understood and they are harder to get into. My partner Brian and I want to change this, so we released this commentary. This package won second-place broadcast commentary in Colorado for the year. The package starts at time 3:12
Diversity on Staff
I have always wanted to have as big and diverse a staff as possible on Eagle Valley Student Media. In order to achieve this, I had to find people that do not look like me and invite them to participate. Because of that, our staff has many diverse perspectives. We have athletes, actors, dancers, band members, NHS members, student council members, boys, girls, white, Hispanic, freshman, sophomores, juniors, and seniors.
Diversity of Coverage
It is important that every group in our school is represented. That means not reporting on the same stories or people every issue. Starting my sophomore year, I made a list of everybody that had been interviewed by the staff. It is important that when people pick someone they are going to interview that the person is not on the list. That way, everyone has a chance to tell their story, and we don't get the same voices over and over again. I love reporting on sports, and I try to report every team fairly. This means not posting all football or basketball stories when there are countless other student athletes in our school. This year, the boys basketball team got quarantined during games we were going to live broadcast. I insisted that we continue to do the broadcast of the JV and varsity girls games despite the fact that they get significantly less views on average. This even meant traveling to a different school to do so. That is what it means to me to report on every team in the school fairly.
