WEEKLY UPDATE
Good afternoon,
We’ve had a lovely week in Reception! The children have come back feeling settled, happy and ready to learn, which has been wonderful to see.
In Phonics, we have been working hard on reading longer words such as bigger, rabbit and hammer. The children are becoming more confident at spotting the sounds they know and blending them together. We have also been practising our tricky words to help build fluency when reading.
You may have noticed that your child’s new reading books have some trickier words with digraphs in them. It can be really helpful to encourage them to spot the diagraphs in the word first before they read them e.g. reading the word 'goat' point to the 'oa' and say 'diagraph?' then go back to the beginning of the word and sound the whole word out 'g-oa-t'.
During our handwriting sessions, we have been focusing carefully on correct letter formation. We have also been practising writing simple sentences that begin with “I can see a…” and remembering to use finger spaces between each word.
In Maths, we have been exploring the square numbers 4 and 9. We have looked at different ways to make 9, focusing on 8 and 1 more. We have been using the stem sentence, “1 less than 9 is 8,” and have practised doubling 4 to make 8, then adding one more to make 9. The children have enjoyed using practical resources to help them see this clearly.
As part of our People Who Help Us topic, we have been learning about dentists. We talked about why looking after our teeth is so important and discussed ways we can keep them healthy.
Please don’t forget to check Tapestry for updates about your child’s learning and home learning activities.
