Material Processing
Grade Level: 9, 10, 11, 12 Length: Semester Prerequisites: Introduction to IT
Material Processing is a beginning level elective class for one semester. The primary goal of this class is to show the students the basics to woodworking and manufacturing. The course is designed to take the student through the processes needed to produce products out of wood material. Students will learn and understand wood materials, processes, joinery, hand tools, machinery, and safety. The course is primarily hands-on learning in the woods laboratory, however, class discussions and assignments are also emphasized. Safety is a major focus of this class. Architectural Millwork
Grade Level: 10, 11, 12 Length: Semester Prerequisites: Material Processing
Architectural Millwork is an intermediate elective class for one semester. Students will apply their knowledge of joinery and woodworking principles to produce a complex woods project. The course is designed to review and encourage the student through the processes needed to make a piece of furniture. Students will learn and better understand wood materials, processes, tools, machinery, and safety. This course is aimed at developing the students’ ability to plan and produce furniture/cabinetry products. In-depth, hands-on work makes the student more aware of woodworking processes, machines, materials, terminology and safety. Students are expected to pay for their materials and have their project completed by the end of the semester. Students will also be encouraged (and Spring Semester required) to participate in the Iowa Industrial Technology Exposition held at South Polk High School.

Advanced Cabinetmaking
Grade Level: 11, 12 Length: Semester Prerequisites: Material Processing
Advanced Cabinetmaking is an elective class for one semester. The primary goal of this class is for students to demonstrate their design and manufacturing skills. Students will design a piece of furniture or cabinet that solves a problem. Once the design is completed, students will have to calculate the material list and determine the cost of the project. The project needs to have a door or drawer as part of the project. Students are expected to pay for their materials and have their project completed by the end of the semester. Students will also be encouraged (and Spring Semester required) to participate in the Iowa Industrial Technology Exposition held at South Polk High School.
