Language Arts/Guided Reading

The ability to read is one of the most important abilities students acquire during 1st Grade. 1st Graders typically go from reading a few words at the beginning of the year to reading short chapter books by the end of the year. We do a lot of varied instruction and activities to help students receive a wide range of reading experience. Our Language Arts period is taught whole group, and typically features a teacher read-aloud. Students are then seen in smaller guided reading groups where they work on the specific skills that they most need. Here are some of the concepts we work on during our reading instruction:

  • Phonemic Awareness
  • Phonological Awareness
  • Fluency
  • Decoding
  • Sight Words
  • Spelling
  • Comprehension
