Students will create original writing samples with while focusing on the analytical scoring traits according to the Pennsylvania Academic Standards.
Students will be placed into Guided Reading groups where they will receive small group instruction at their instructional level.
Module 1:
Focus Standards: use phonics and word analysis skills in decoding words, determine main idea of informational text, summarize the text, integrate information from two texts on the same topic, cite relevant detail from text to support what the text says, make inferences, story elements, multiple meaning words, read and comprehend fiction on grade level, write informative/explanatory texts, understand and use vocabulary, develop and strengthen writing skills, verbs: main,helping, linking, present/past/future tenses, subject/verb agreement, and irregular verbs
Supporting Standards: read with accuracy and fluency to support comprehension, use examples in text to support what the text says, make inferences, determine the meaning of words and phrases, figurative language, determine the meaning of multiple meaning words, read and comprehend non-fiction and informational text on grade level, sequence events, write for extended time frames, demonstrate command of the conventions of standard English when speaking
Module 2:
Focus Standards: know and apply grade level phonics and decoding skills, explain events in a text, integrate information from two texts, determine theme of the text, summarize text, compare and contrast, read and comprehend fiction on grade level, write narratives, word choice, use of the internet to produce and publish writing, conduct short research projects, nouns: common/proper, singular/plural/possessives, subject/predicates, run-on sentences and fragments, compound subjects/predicates
Supporting Standards: read with accuracy and fluency, aquire and use grade appropriate conversation, demonstrate command of conventions of standard English, write routinely
Module 3:
Focus Standards: compare and contrast events told from two different points of view, integrate information from two texts, write informative and explanatory texts, identify and introduce the topic clearly, develop topics with facts/definitions, write paragraphs, use technology to produce and publish writing, conduct short research projects, engage in discussions, report on a topic or text, simple/compound sentences, clauses/phrases/complex sentences, types of sentences, punctuation
Supporting Standards: read with accuracy and fluency, aquire and use accurately grade appropraite conversation, demonstrate command of the conventions of English, determine meaning of unknown and multiple-meaning words, write routinely
Module 4:
Focus Standards: know and apply grade level phonics, explain events, compare/contrast events, integrate information from two texts, cite revelent details, read and comprehend fiction at grade level, write opinion pieces, compare/contrast themes, introduce topic and state opinion, provide reasons that are supported by facts and details, engage in discussions, adjectives, adverbs
Supporting Standards: read with accuracy and fluency, choose words and phrases to convey ideas precisely, demonstrate command of the conventions of English, write routinely
Module 5:
Focus Standards: use reasons and evidence to support points in a text, integrate information from two texts, cite details from text, pronouns: antecedents, possessives, subject/object pronouns, possessives

Module 6:
Focus Standards: integrate information from two texts, write opinion pieces, prepositions
Supporting Standards: read with accuracy and fluency, aquire and use grade appropriate conversation, write routinely, identify evidence, add audio recordings and visual displays to presentations to enhance main ideas or themes, demonstrate the command of the conventions of standard English
Module 7:
Focus Standards: determine theme of the text, explain major differences between poems, determine meaning of words including figurative language, homophones
Supporting Standrads: make connections between the texts, acquire and use grade appropriate conversational skills, read and comprehend fictional stories at grade level, write narratives, read with accuracy and fluency, draw evidence from literary or informational texts, write routinely over extended time frames, demonstrate command of the conventions of English
