Here’s a list of Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) that most 8th-grade families have when considering joining the high school band program.
Symphonic Band is the same thing as concert band in the middle school. It is just another name to differentiate band from middle school and high school in East Penn.
Everyone regardless of ensemble should sign-up for "Symphonic Band" the course code on the Program of Study is 750. Anyone auditioning for Jazz Band will be placed in Jazz Ensemble by Mr. Koppenol. ALL STUDENTS NEED to check their class schedule over the summer to make sure you have been enrolled in the correct class. Contact Mr. Koppenol IMMEDIATELY with any scheduling issues.
NO, although it is highly encouraged for students to do both, you DO NOT HAVE to do marching and symphonic band. Students who do marching and symphonic bands get many more opportunities to perform, travel, and develop their musical skills.
We offer a set number of "study days". If you must sit out of rehearsal to catch-up on work you simply need to speak to Mr. Koppenol about needing some class time to do work from other classes. If used EXCESSIVELY it may affect the students grade in the long run. Remember, many students are able to do band without a study hall. This helps develop time management between school and their activities.
While having experience playing an instrument is helpful, it is not required! Our program welcomes students at all skill levels, including beginners. If you’re new to an instrument, we’ll provide the support and guidance you need to succeed. For some ensembles, we may recommend starting with a beginner or concert band to build your skills before moving to more advanced groups like marching band or jazz band.
Our band program includes a wide range of instruments, including woodwinds (flute, clarinet, saxophone, bassoon), brass (trumpet, trombone, french horn, tuba), percussion (snare drum, bass drum, cymbals, mallets), and more. If you already play an instrument, we encourage you to continue with it, but if you’re open to trying something new, we can help you choose an instrument that suits your interests and abilities.
The school provides some instruments for student use, but depending on the instrument and availability, you may need to rent or purchase your own. We can provide recommendations for local music stores where you can rent or purchase instruments. If you're uncertain about which instrument to choose, our director can help guide you based on your interests and needs.
The time commitment depends on the ensemble you join. Most band rehearsals are after school and typically last 1–2 hours. If you're in marching band, there will be additional practices, particularly in the fall. There are also performances throughout the year, such as concerts, competitions, and football games, which may require more time. However, we’ll make sure to communicate schedules well in advance so you can plan accordingly.
Absolutely! Many of our students successfully balance band with other extracurricular activities like sports, theater, or clubs. We understand that students are involved in many activities, so we work to create schedules that accommodate multiple commitments. If conflicts arise, we try to be flexible and supportive.
Some of our ensembles, such as the jazz band or wind ensemble, may require an audition, especially for placement in specific sections. However, for our beginner or entry-level ensembles, auditions are generally not required. If an audition is needed, we will provide information on what to prepare and ensure the process is fair and welcoming.
Our band program offers a variety of performance opportunities throughout the year. These include concerts, community events, music festivals, competitions, and pep rallies. Students can also participate in special events like band trips, which may involve performing at out-of-town festivals or competitions. Whether you're in concert band or marching band, you’ll have plenty of chances to showcase your talent.
Yes! Depending on the group you’re in, there are opportunities for travel. Marching band often travels to local competitions and out-of-town events. The concert and jazz bands may also have travel opportunities for music festivals and special performances. These trips are a great way to bond with your fellow band members and experience new places.
To sign up for band, you’ll need to register through the school’s normal registration process. If you’re unsure how to sign up, or if you have specific questions about the program, you can reach out to our band director. We also encourage you to attend any informational meetings or events for incoming 9th-graders to learn more.
14. How do I sign up for marching band?
Anyone that wants to join the marching band should come to at least one marching band rehearsal during April or May. We will have a parent meeting and signup day at our rehearsal on Monday June 2. The two rehearsals on June 2 and June 9 are MANDATORY to join. We HIGHLY encourage students to come to as many rehearsals as they can in April and May to make sure they like doing marching band when they sign-up and so they are ahead before with music and marching before we are full swing in July.
For marching band, there is a uniform that the school provides, though you may need to purchase some accessories (like shoes, gloves, etc.). For concert performances, you’ll typically be required to wear formal concert attire (e.g., black dress shoes, black pants or skirts, and a black shirt). We strive to keep costs reasonable and will provide all necessary details well in advance.
There is typically a band fee to help cover the costs of uniforms, equipment, sheet music, and other expenses related to performances and travel. The fee varies by ensemble and participation level. We aim to keep fees affordable, and there may be opportunities for fundraising or financial assistance if needed. Our goal is to make the program accessible to all students.
Our band program is built on a foundation of respect, teamwork, and fun. We focus on creating a supportive, inclusive environment where students feel encouraged to grow both musically and personally. Band is not only about playing music but also about making lifelong friendships, being part of a community, and enjoying memorable experiences together.
We offer summer band camps, workshops, and other events to help incoming students get a head start on learning the music, meeting other band members, and familiarizing themselves with the program. These events are a great way to dive into band life before the school year begins.
