1. When looking for "back-to-school" shoes, consider Velcro or "hook and loop" closures. Tying shoes is a difficult skill. It is considered a first grade skill, and even then, you must be willing to work on this skill daily. Can it be done? Yes, but very few children will master this skill in kindergarten. At this age, the "I can do it" feeling is empowering...there is no shame in Velcro. :)
2. When buying a backpack, make sure it is a full-sized backpack. It must be large enough to fit a folder inside without folding it. The students will also visit the library each week. They like to choose very large picture books. Having a large backpack helps get these books home comfortably.
3. Have a regular bedtime and wake up time...even on weekends! I'm not a fun spoiler, but your little one will come home tired and possibly cranky after a very long day of school. Regular sleep and meal times will alleviate this and help make for a smoother transition to a full day of school.
4. Practice self-care habits at home. Practice all aspects of the potty routine, sneezing/coughing into the elbow, blowing noses and washing hands afterward EVERY TIME.
5. We will be having lunch daily! Have your child practice opening snack bags, unwrapping sandwiches, opening milk cartons, putting straws in drink pouches, etc. We will always be there to help, but remember, the goal is to make your little one as independent as possible. When your incoming kindergartener feels confident and knows he or she is capable, you will both feel ready for the first day of school!
