Monthly Updates
Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Tip of the Month
The month of November is Native American Heritage Month, or as it is commonly referred to, American Indian and Alaska Native Heritage Month. The month is time to celebrate rich diverse cultures, traditions, and histories and to acknowledge the important contributions of Native people. It is also important for our schools and district to help our students better understand the unique challenges Native people have faced both historically and in the present. If you're interested in designing and delivering more culturally relevant and responsive instruction about American Indian people take a look at the Toolkit for “With and About” , or challenge your thinking with an article entitled, “Rewriting History- for the Better" , both articles posted from Learning for Justice staff writers. A “Rewriting History- for the Better" toolkit offers practical resources to build in accuracy and inclusitivity when we are talking about the impact of Native peoples in American history. Newsela also has resources and articles to use with your students. There is a text set entitled, "Native American History Month" that can be used with students of various ages. You can also find additional information and classroom ideas from the National Museum of the American Indian page sponsored by the Smithsonian and explore the various professional development recordings on the Native Knowledge 360º page.

School Climate Toolkit Reminder
November is a great time to illicit student input and voice regarding school climate and get a baseline. Affinity groups can be an effective way to gather important feedback and build collective action. Affintiy groups allow, usually marginalized groups, the opportunity to gather, talk and transfer their discussion into action. This action can empower students and make for a more equitable learning experiences. If you want to learn more about using these affinity groups check out, "Making Space: Affinity groups offer a platform for voices often relegated to the margins". Also, the Alliance for Study of School Climate (ASSC) website offers a comprehensive list of resources and interventions to consider. You can also check out the Leading Equity Podcast, hosted by Dr. Sheldon Eakins for discussion topics and resources to support your school climate efforts. Additional School Climate resources can be found on the School Climate Toolkit or the PDE School Climate resource page.
