Goodreads Summary:
So the villagers elect the bossy Don Pepe as their mayor. Before long, singing of any kind is outlawed. Even the teakettle is afraid to whistle!
But there is one noisy rooster who doesn't give two mangos about this mayor's silly rules. Instead, he does what roosters were born to do.
He sings:
"Kee-kee-ree-KEE!"
Carmen Deedy's masterfully crafted allegory and Eugene Yelchin's bright, whimsical mixed-media paintings celebrate the spirit of freedom -- and the courage of those who are born to sing at any cost.
Local Reviews:
Jolan, Winesburg fifth grade: If this book had no words, the pictures would explain just as good. The rooster would not be quiet no matter what.
Scott, Winesburg sixth grade: The book was very good it had good pictures and a good story so I think it has a good chance to win. There is a town that was very loud that sang from day to night. Because of the mayor, the people could not sleep and were very annoyed by it. They get a new mayor and he makes a law that there is no singing. But then there was something that was very loud that was a very big problem with the mayor. Read the book to find out what happens.
Regan, Winesburg fourth grade: I like this book because it has a lot of bright colors. The people look like cartoon people and I like cartoon people because they look funny. The mayor wanted quiet and the rooster would not be quite. Read the book to find out why. I love this book because it has a lot of good graphics.
Jonah, Winesburg third grade: It all started in a loud town, a very loud town and everyone wanted it to be quiet. So they fired the mayor and elected a new one and then one day a rooster crowed right beside the mayor. Read this book to find out the rest.
