Year 4 Blue and Lime ventured together on a day-trip out of London to visit the city of Colchester in North-East Essex. We plotted our route on a map as a Geography fieldwork exercise, and studied the Romans' conquest of the area, and Boudicca's destructive revolt in History. Year 4 learned about a part of England quite different to London, and it was a pleasure to show them round!
Visiting Colchester Town Hall
Colchester has a striking Victorian Town Hall on the High Street. Mr Higgins' mum, Theresa Higgins, served as councillor in the Borough for 20 years and as Mayor in 2015. Now an Alderman of the city she could invite us in and explain how the council operates!
This room is the Mayor's parlour. In the blurry photo below, you can see the royal mace in the cabinet behind us!
Year 4 preside over the council chamber! Chiara as Mayor of Colchester, Giulia and Chayce as Deputies, Luka and Loreanny sat to the left to provide legal advice. Sitting in the council chamber, Year 4 proposed a vote on allowing mobile phones in schools - which the mayor allowed!
Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star
Colchester's newest statue on the High Street honours the Taylor sisters who wrote the words to the world-famous song 'Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star' in the city in 1806.
St. Botolph's Priory
St. Botolph's priory is the ruin of a mediaeval religious house. It housed monks for thousands of years until was looted by King Henry VIII in 1536, an further destroyed in the English Civil War. It provided the grand backdrop to our lunchtime!
Colchester Castle is near-thousand year-old Norman castle built after William the Conqueror's invasion on the foundations of the old Roman temple of Claudius. This as once the centre of Roman Colchester, the capital of the province, Britannia. It was this very spot that luckless Roman civilians hid from the Iceni warriors avenging Roman oppression of their tribe.
The Castle Park contains remnants of the Roman wall, mosaics, the site of the execution of the King's commander in the Civil War - and this spectacular playground!
Preparing for our Performance at Alexandra Palace on May 17th
Year 4 Blue and Year 3 Orange went to see the theatre and stage at Alexandra Palace ahead of our show on the them 'Belonging' which will be performed there in May.
Music - Year 4 Blue on Trumpets and Clarinets!
You can watch our first ever concert in full here!
Lessons are taught by Clara and John from the Haringey Music Service.
Science - Electricity
Our task was to create working electric circuits that cause a bulb to light or motor to rotate.
Science Week
We had a visit from professional owl-keepers for Science week. Owls of different species took turns flying across our assembly hall. Our own Ilian took a turn at feeding an owl!
Using Gravitrax sets, we put our logic and the force of gravity to the test to create tracks where a metal marble rolled downwards to a finish block. Not as easy as it sounds!
With all our history knowledge, Year 4 Blue went to see the real artefacts from different ancient civilisations. We searched for the Rosetta Stone, Egyptian mummies, the Mesopotamian demon Humbaba, the tablets telling the world's oldest story, the scultpures of the Parthenon and the severed head of Augustus Caesar!
For our Design & Technology topic we are making moving pictures with simple mechanisms.
Our final project will have 2 pictures with 2 fixed pivots, 2 floating pivots and a lever to make them move back and forth.
For our first lesson we made prototypes with just 1 moving picture.
Come back later in the term to see the final products!
We looked at the South African Ndebele artist, Esther Mahlangu. Her innovation has been to use the traditional Ndebele style and colours with messages on canvass. Ndebele people have long used them for beads, necklaces and houses. We tried to copy the striking geometry and colours of the Ndebele people's art.
English Writing - The Life of FloelLa Benjamin So Far!
We have been reading 'Coming to England' - Baroness Floella Benjamin's account of her life moving to England from Trinidad in 1960 and the obstacles to overcame on her way to many successes. Here Blue Class students have written biographical reports. We published these on our computers.
Here you can see some of the strengths of our writing and areas we can improve!
Partridge spotted near pear tree at Earlsmead!
In mid-October, our school was visited by a partridge! - perhaps wandered over from Walthamstow Wetlands? Fulfilling the first line of the Christmas song, it visited our pear trees in the nursery.
Spanish Conversations
Year 4 have been learning Spanish once a week for a year, and we have put their memories to the test as they try to hold a basic opening conversation in Spanish for a minute. You can see how well they have remembered key phrases here!
Blue Class students sometimes politely correct each other when they misremember a phrase or get stuck!
One way we can improve is to keep practising response to the phrases ¿Cómo te llamas? and ¿Cómo estás? correctly without mixing them up!
Blue Class' Adventures in Wonderland
We began our year with a celebration of Lewis Carroll's 'Alice's Adventures in Wonderland'. Some of us here have dressed as the characters Alice, the Mad Hatter, the Cheshire Cat, the Queen of Hearts and one Ace of Spades!
We are learning these wind instruments and how to read music with Clara and John from the Haringey Music Service!
