The 7th and 8th grade art studio courses are designed to provide students with a strong foundation in various fine art techniques, as well as gaining knowledge about art history. Projects will be centered around drawing and painting. Henri Matisse said, "An artist is an explorer."...students will explore their ideas and inspirations using a variety of materials.
The purpose of this course is to develop respectable young men with positive attitudes, leadership skills, and a great work ethic. Boys Athletics will also instill program fundamentals which lay the foundation for a student athlete’s success as a Westlake Chaparral.
Sports offered through Boys Athletics include; Football, Basketball, and Track. Athletes are expected to participate or tryout for at least one sport while enrolled in Athletics. Athletes whose sport is not in season will be participating in our off-season program. Off-season workouts consist of weight training and agility and skill development. Athletic uniform required ($55).
Full year course that allows girls to play volleyball, basketball, track or off-season sports and competitions. Students who do not make teams will remain in off-season activities and competitions. Athletic uniform is required ($55)

COME FIND YOUR VOICE IN WRMS CHOIR!
Welcome to WRMS Choir, a place to learn, to perform, and to have fun! We welcome all students at all levels into our program and invite you to join the other WRMS students who love Choir!
This year-long course is designed to teach, train and develop individual performance skills through the use of color guard equipment. This performing arts group will use contemporary guard equipment (flags, rifles, sabers), modern dance, acting and a wide variety of props. Numerous performance opportunities include half-time shows, pep rallies and competitions. The winter guard competes indoors during the spring. The Westlake Elite Visual Ensemble is open to all 7th and 8th grade students and counts as PE credit. There is a $50 fee for all students and a $250 fee for students who wish to compete.
Students will be challenged to use problem solving techniques and higher level thinking skills along with creative design to produce animations and games using a variety of programs. Skills refined within this class will enable students to be confident, efficient and successful when given technology based assignments
This course is designed to introduce students to some of the more sophisticated programs such as Photoshop, Flash, In-Design and will include basic HTML used in designing web sites. Students will learn to use tools from a variety of applications to create detailed graphic designs, manipulate photographic images, create web pages and incorporate HTML effects.
Students will explore a wide variety of exciting topics such as flight technology, research and design, bridge construction, rocketry and space, and computer animated drafting using the computer and installed software. Science, technology and various hands-on activities are implemented to provide exploration opportunities and real world applications for the students
The course includes information on decision-making, nutrition, positive life style, human sexuality, drugs, alcohol, and tobacco. Successful completion of this course will give the student the required .5 high school credit. Students must pass end of course evaluation.
This course is designed to help students build a solid foundation in programming fundamentals using Swift and/or Java as the language. Students will get practical experience with the tools, techniques, and concepts needed to build basic iOS/Android app from scratch. Students will also learn user interface design principles, which are fundamental to programming and making great apps. Prior programming experience is not required for this course. If you have programming experience, you can move through the early lessons quickly as you continue to learn about software development tools, concepts, and best practices that go beyond programming fundamentals.
This elective gives students an opportunity to support students with disabilities in a variety of settings. Students taking this class would have a chance to be a peer buddy and to model appropriate social behavior. It is an opportunity to build valuable lasting friendships.
The seventh and eighth grade P.E. class will include a variety of individual, team and lifetime sports. Recreational class games such as hoop house, capture the flag and prison ball will be played. The state mandated physical fitness test will also be administered. A P.E. uniform is required ($25).
This elective gives students the opportunity to support cognitively disabled students in a small specialized PE class. Students would have the chance to work with other students in participating in a variety of physical activities. PE credit is awarded if not in Athletics or PE.
This course is designed to help students learn how to: prepare & deliver outstanding presentations, interact with different types of people, improve image & voice, work in groups efficiently, manage conflicts smoothly, and more. It is an exciting class with many opportunities for partner & group work in a fun, relaxed setting with minimal homework required. This will count as .5 high school elective credit.
Robotics is becoming a larger part of the world in which we live. This class provides students a next step through building and programming basic VEX robots. Students will utilize the scientific method and problem-solving processes involving science, math, technology, and engineering skills in an interdisciplinary manner. Further, students will learn the basic design process using a solid modeling software product. There will be hands on cooperative learning experiences that will engage all learners in critical and creative thinking skills.
Only 8th grade students may be a teacher, office, library, or counselor aide. Students should be in good standing both academically (passing all courses) and behaviorally to sign up for this class. This is a one semester elective only.
A year-long course where students-staff are responsible for creating the WRMS yearbook. They will create and design the theme, page design formations, photographs, interviews, stories, photo captions, and marketing/sales. Each year the yearbook staff creates a 130+ page school yearbook with annual sales to over 750 students. Ideal candidates are organized, responsible, creative self-starters with strong writing and photography skills. Yearbook students must be able to work independently in order to meet deadlines, function under pressure, work well with others and attend extracurricular events outside of the school day.
