What is gamification?

----------------------------------------------

Why is gamification effective in the classroom?

OR

Why do I want to use gamification in the classroom?

All members of the team roll one die each. Add up the number shown on the dice. That is the number of words your team can use to answer the first question. Roll again, answer the second question. Be ready to share out!

Break 11-11:15am

Theme 11:15-12pm

Choosing your theme:

Needs to be something you like, your students like, and you are passionate about.

Can be created around an existing unit but doesn't have to be connected directly to curriculum.

Borrow theme ideas from the world around you. Movies, TV shows, books, games, life experiences, etc.

Other Ideas:

Super Heroes

Disney

Pokemon

Amazing Race

Olympics

Dystopian

Pirates

Hunger Games

Space

Master Chef

Lemonade Wars

Time to Brainstorm!

Click on this Padlet to add your ideas for themes you could use in your classroom.

Feel free to add pictures, websites, etc.

Check out the other themes being added. Do any of those strike a chord?

Pick ONE theme that you could build on over the course of this week.

Lunch 12-1:00pm

Setting 1:15pm

Setting- The location and backdrop for the action in your story

Could be anywhere that makes sense for your theme from a real place to fantasy, from the future, to the past, to the present.

Take a minute to brainstorm where your game might take place.

Go to your Planning Doc and add your ideas.

Characters 1:45pm

Who will your characters be?

What role will your students play?

Heroes? Villains?

Will the characters be in groups? Houses? Crews? Guilds?

Examples from my game:

  • Trainees, Astronauts, Payload Specialists, Mission Specialists, Pilots, Commanders, Supreme Commanders
  • NASA Crews: Mariner, Apollo, Orion, Discovery, Columbia, Atlantis, Endeavor, and Enterprise
  • Rogue the Astronaut
  • Mechanical Engineers

Time to Brainstorm!

  • What characters will your students take on?
  • Who will be the villain?
  • Will they be in groups?
  • What will the groups be called?
  • Who will you be in the story?

Go to your Planning Doc and add your ideas.

Action 2:15pm

There are two types of action in your game:

The overarching goal for your class/game. Or otherwise known as the end game.

AND
