DFS Timeline: 9th - 12th Grade

9th-12th Grade:


  • EGHS students partner with DFS to volunteer during each year of high school


12th Grade:

  • Volunteer hours for senior year due

  • Senior Year- student completes application for Dollars for Scholars scholarships ON TIME (Feb-Mar)


April

  • Students anonymously matched to scholarships based on information gathered on DFS application


May

  • Scholarship awards announced at Senior Recognition Night


First Year of College/University


October

  • Students receive a reminder letter to claim their scholarship(s).


November 15-December 15

  • Students claim scholarship money by returning documents confirming enrollment in college/university


January

  • Scholarship money is released to college/university in January of your first year of college/university


Questions About Volunteering

How many community service hours are students asked to contribute?

Answer:

Students are asked to volunteer at least 10 hours each school year for a total of 40 hours over their high school career.

What happens if I didn't volunteer every year during my high school career?

Answer:

If you didn't complete all your hours of service one year (minimum of 10 per year) or forgot to volunteer at some point during your high school career, start now!

It is never too late to become a DFS volunteer. You are encouraged to make up any missing hours you need in order to meet your goal of 40 hours of volunteer service. Some of our scholarships have criteria which require at least 40 hours of volunteer service!

I'm a senior, but didn't reach my 40 hours of volunteer service during high school. Now what?

Answer:

All students are highly encouraged to complete an Eagle Grove Area Dollars for Scholars scholarship application during senior year EVEN if he or she did not volunteer each school year and/or reach 40 total hours during the high school years. However, you should be aware that some scholarships can only be awarded to students who have completed their volunteer hours.

Questions About Scholarships

Does the Eagle Grove Area Dollars for Scholars Chapter offer scholarships for students interested in specific careers?

Answer:

Yes, there are several scholarships available for students entering specific career fields. A few of our career specific scholarships relate to nursing, education, and the automotive fields.

Where can Eagle Grove Dollars for Scholars scholarships be used?

Answer:

It depends on the scholarship.

Some scholarships can be used only by students attending specific universities or colleges. For example, there are several scholarships available only for Iowa Central Community College bound students. Others are available for students attending Iowa State University, Drake University, or a four year university.

Several scholarships do not stipulate a specific higher education location at all.

Questions About Claiming Your Scholarship

How do I claim my scholarship?

Answer:

All students who receive awards will be given an Eagle Grove Area Dollars For Scholars scholarship award letter soon after Senior Recognition Night. This letter is very important! Be sure to keep it in a safe place so you can claim your scholarship!


Here are a few key points you will need to remember in order to claim your Eagle Grove Area Dollars for Scholars award(s).


⭐ Checks will be issued upon completion of your first semester of college and will apply to your SECOND semester of college.


⭐ Requests for deferment of payment must be made in writing to the Eagle Grove Area Dollars for Scholars board as soon as possible after scholarships are awarded in May. The deadline for our board to receive your request for deferment is September 1. Requests must be approved by our board and for a valid reason such as military training. Otherwise, money not claimed by December 15 (following high school graduation) will be forfeited.


⭐ You will be asked to return your original scholarship award letter that will be sent to you in May! You must fill out the bottom portion of that letter and send proof of your college enrollment prior to your second semester of college.

Proof of college enrollment could be your second semester schedule of classes or your registration form for second semester.


⭐ To claim your scholarship award, you must send the completed original award letter and proof of your college enrollment between November 15-December 15 (following high school graduation) to:

⭐ Scholarship money not claimed by December 15 (following high school graduation) will be forfeited.


⭐ Your scholarship money will be sent directly to the college address that you provide and will be made out to you and your college jointly. The check will need to be endorsed by both you and the college.

You'll need to provide the address for your school's business office on the original award letter.


⭐ If you OR your parents wish to know your original award letter and proof of enrollment was received by Eagle Grove Area Dollars for Scholars by December 15, you MUST send your letter certified mail. No EXCEPTIONS!
