Asynchronous Learning Opportunities

Virtual Field Trips and Other Online Activities

Asynchronous: Video #1 - This is the first in an online video series that identifies sources for events that can be used with students in either a face-to-face setting or remotely. Each video will be supplemented with a document containing links to the resources identified in the video. The first video provides an overview of the concept along with numerous examples. Subsequent videos will address how to search for specific topics, ways for teachers to create their own virtual field trips plus activities and assessments that can be used. CTLE certification credit is available provided the participant completes an exit ticket that includes ways the material will be applied.

Asynchronous: Video #2 – This session will focus on the resources available in Google Earth Voyager. There are over 700 different expeditions available. Teachers are also able to create their own expedition using Projects in Google Earth. A related tutorial is identified for those wanting to explore that tool. CTLE certification credit is available provided the participant completes an exit ticket that includes ways the material will be applied.

7/15 How to Use Google Tools to Increase Collaboration in a Classroom, 8:30am - 2:30pm

Location: Erie 1 BOCES, 355 Harlem Rd. West Seneca, NY 14224.

In the 21st century classroom technology is an invaluable tool that can create a greater level of engagement and collaboration. Collaboration is a necessary component in the classroom. By using technology the teacher can allow students to collaborate and work together on the same artifact. The teacher also will have the ability to view the amount of work being done by each student. In this session we will be looking at some of the tools offered through Google and pedagogy that can allow for students to collaborate with each other in the classroom. The teacher will be able to interact with students both digitally and in person to increase understanding.

8/5 Using Comics in the Classroom, 8:30am - 2:30pm

Location: Erie 1 BOCES, 355 Harlem Rd. West Seneca, NY 14224.

Comics are an excellent way to allow students to demonstrate their knowledge of content material. They can serve as a representation of knowledge and they are easier to visualize when students are asked to recall and apply the content learned in class. Comics will allow for students to develop creative and higher level thought processes that will allow for both visual and verbal communication.

In this session we will learn some of the benefits to creating comics in the classroom and will also learn some of the tools available that can allow us to create these in our classrooms. We will look at how comic creation can be a student driven activity that will translate into other skills needed in the classroom.

8/9 The Many Uses of Book Creator! It's Not Just for Creating Books! 8:30am - 2:30pm

Location: Erie 1 BOCES, 355 Harlem Rd. West Seneca, NY 14224.

Yes! Book Creator is a great way to create books. The teacher can create content for their class with all of content information. However, Book Creator is not the same as simply creating a book with words and pictures. Book creator also allows for links, videos, files, and much more.

Book Creator can serve as an excellent way to have student driven curriculum. The teacher is able to allow students to create and can even send out work that the students will complete. You can set up journals which will show the work that students have done throughout the year. Come to this workshop to learn how to use Book Creator as a tool and find some of the many ways that you can use it is much more than just a way to create books.

8/16 TGT- A System for Creating Collaboration Through Competition, 8:30am - 11:30am

Location: Erie 1 BOCES, 355 Harlem Rd. West Seneca, NY 14224.

TGT (Teams, Games, Tournaments) is a model which is going to allow for students to work in heterogeneous groups to learn their material. Those heterogeneous groups will work as teams which allows for students to work cooperatively and learn from each other. Tournaments focus on homogeneous groups that will compete with each other. This is an excellent practice for any courses that focus on problem solving (especially mathematics).

Come to this session to learn how you can incorporate TGT into your classroom and have some fun as we create competitions with each other!
