PE Units

We will begin the school year with learning our routines/expectations and assessing our current physical fitness level. Our fitness testing will be followed by our first units which are basketball and volleyball. All units are in alphabetical order. The order in which we participate in the various units changes based on weather and availability of facilities and equipment.


Badminton

Throughout this unit of study, students will experience the promotion of effective movement development and fitness through badminton skills and game participation. Skill development will include focusing on the development of the serve, the forehand hit, the back hand hit, the overhead hit,game rules and safety.

Unit Outcomes/Objectives:

1) Students will learn the rules of the badminton serve. They will display safety while properly demonstrating the rules of serving.

2) Students will learn a variety of rallying strategies (clear, drop, and smash shots) used in badminton. They will properly demonstrate the forehand and backhand strokes.

3) Students will learn the scoring rules of badminton. They will properly demonstrate safety and etiquette while practicing their serving and returning (rallying) skills.

4) Students will properly demonstrate previously learned rules, strategies, and skills while competing against their classmates in a series of badminton games. They will track their progress using a tournament format sheet.


Basketball

During this unit students will learn the rules of basketball and will enjoy the many physical and mental aspects of the game of basketball. They will improve upon social skills including teamwork and cooperation. Basketball is a lifelong recreational activity that students will be able to enjoy for the rest of their lives and this unit will strengthen their understanding of the game. The overall purpose of this unit is to learn more about basketball by having fun and working with their teammates.

Unit Outcomes/Objectives:

1. Students will discuss and define the terms and rules used in basketball.

2. Students will demonstrate proper dribbling and ball-handling technique and posture in drills and in games.

3. Students will demonstrate proper shooting technique and understands the acronym BEEF (balance, eyes, elbow, and follow-through).

4. Students will demonstrate an understanding of new strategies/plays that will be effective in games.

5. Students will maintain good sportsmanship and etiquette during participation in basketball.

Floor Hockey

Floor hockey is played the same way as normal hockey, 5 players and a goalie on each team. Floor Hockey is played using plastic hockey sticks and hollow plastic hockey balls in a defined space with goals set up on the far ends. By the end of this unit students should be able to pass and receive the ball while in motion, shoot the ball for a goal, and proper and safe stick handling skills.

Unit Outcomes/Objectives:

1) Students will properly demonstrate stick-handling by safely maintaining control of a ball or puck. They will be able to assist their partners in a series of stick-handling drills, and give them corrective feedback if needed.

2) Students will properly demonstrate stick-handling and striking skills in a variety of lead-up games and activities. They will be able to develop effective offensive and defensive strategies used in floor hockey.

3) Students will properly demonstrate previously learned rules, skills, and strategies in a modified game of floor hockey. They will be able to safely display successful game strategies and skill performances in a game setting.


Soccer

Unit Outcomes/Objectives:

1) Students will properly demonstrate dribbling, receiving and passing skills used in soccer. They will be able to reflect upon their performances as how to improve their skill development.

2) Students will learn/demonstrate offensive and defensive strategies used in soccer. They will be able to develop and utilize effective game strategies while participating in a variety of lead-up soccer games.

3) Students will properly demonstrate previously learned rules, skills, and strategies in a modified game of soccer. They will be able to display successful game strategies and skill performances in a game setting.


Pickleball

Unit Outcomes/Objectives:

1) Students will learn the four rules of the pickle-ball serve. They will display safety while properly demonstrating the rules of serving.

2) Students will learn a variety of rallying strategies used in pickle-ball. They will properly demonstrate the forehand and backhand stroke.

3) Students will learn the scoring rules of pickle-ball. They will properly demonstrate safety and etiquette while practicing their serving and returning (rallying) skills.

4) Students will properly demonstrate previously learned rules and skills while competing against their classmates in a series of pickle-ball games. They will track their progress using a tournament format/sheet.


Softball

At the end of the unit students will be able to properly demonstrate how to throw and catch a rubber softball, use the equipment properly and safely, field ground and fly balls, know the rules of the PE game, along with the differences between baseball, fast pitch softball, and slow pitch softball. The skills the students learn the first few days will be used in the games they play later in the unit.

Unit Outcomes/Objectives:

1) Students successfully perform the skills related to softball including, but not limited to: throwing, catching, and batting (hitting).

2) Students demonstrate a knowledge of offensive and defensive strategies as they relate to game situations.

3) Students know and apply the rules of softball in game situations.

4) Students demonstrate proper sportsmanship, teamwork, and cooperation skills during the unit of softball.

5) Students know and adhere to all safety rules and procedures.

Team Handball

The intention of this unit is to familiarize students with the popular world sport of team handball. While it is often confused with the sport called “handball,” which is a game similar to racket ball, team handball is a fast paced game consisting of seven players on each team. Team handball players must work together to attack an opponent’s goal, while also defending their own.

Unit Outcomes/Objectives:

  • Students will gain insight into the playing area, rules of the game, specific game skills, and strategies employed both offensively and defensively.
  • Students will be expected to demonstrate the required skills of the game such as hand dribbling, the chest pass, overhead pass, and shooting in dynamic settings.
  • Tactical elements such as moving with and without the ball, attacking an opponents goal, maintaining possession, defending space and your goal, and being able to start and restart the game during various situations will be stressed.
  • Students will build upon prior knowledge of like games (floor hockey, soccer, basketball, etc.) and utilize skills learned in these games to improve motor skills and physical fitness in a dynamic and challenging setting .
  • As a team sport, personal social skills and traits such as leadership, cooperation, teamwork, and responsibility will be emphasized.
  • The ultimate objective is to have students experience the game through playing in modified settings.
