Durham Sixth Form Centre is delighted to share the work of Lewis Hobson/CYANCIC. His exhibition 'Durham Ice Rink' launches with a preview event April 19th 5-7pm in the Dead Dog Gallery

Lewis Hobson is a street artist who has created some of the largest and most iconic murals in the region as Durham Spray Paints. Establishing the North East's first mural festival in Spennymoor in 2023, Lewis founded a community interest company dedicated to supporting community arts projects titled, CYAN_CIC.

This exhibition brings together the community spirit, passion and heritage of Durham ice rink. Opened in the 1930s, Durham ice rink proved a huge success until its closure in 1996. Its lasting legacy, captured through a collection of memorabilia, photography and memories, serves as an opportunity to celebrate the ice rink community.

'The ‘Durham Ice Rink Project’ was always something I had in the back of my mind. It started from listening to my parents and grandparents talk about the time they spent there. When long lost friends from the ice rink meet, you hear the stories and see the smiles on their faces, getting a glimpse of how special that place was.’

'Having attended Durham Sixth Form Centre as a student over 10 years ago, it has been great to find a passionate and motivated arts hub in the city centre. I'm really appreciative of the huge support for this exhibition.’

Exhibition runs until Friday 17th May

Durham Sixth Form Centre is an outstanding and oversubscribed sixth form in Durham city centre. It currently has over 1800 students in the 16 to 19 age range studying A Level and BTEC courses. We also offer Level 4 Foundation in Art and Design.

The Arts and Media (AM) Faculty offers an extensive range of A Levels and L3 equivalent courses across visual, performing, media and written arts. In addition we run and participate in high profile public events such as The Big Draw, Debating Matters and Lumiere. We maintain strong relationships with cultural organisations and also run Durham County Council’s Secondary Art Teacher Network. Through this arts advocacy work, students and colleagues from our own centre and beyond engage in the opportunities available. We achieved Artsmark Platinum status in 2018 demonstrating our outstanding commitment to the arts.

The artist in residence programme builds on the experience we have gained through our pilot. Since 2018 we have welcomed a diverse group of emerging artists. We aim to support emerging artists as well as those with a more resolved practice. Developing sector skills within an educational context, we work to support these emerging artists in their professional progression by giving access to a supportive, well-resourced space, outlining a bespoke project, supporting public exhibition and facilitating opportunities to engage with our wider network and professional development training events.

Our students gain greatly from the opportunity to engage with our resident artists. In addition to expected outcomes such as mentoring, inspiration and specialist knowledge, hosting this programme is raising aspiration and spotlighting viable careers within the arts. As a result our students themselves model the ambitions and successes of the artists.

Our evolving artist in residence programme seeks creative ways to support emerging and established artists eager to engage with, and develop their practice, within an educational institution.
