In 2018, Durham Sixth Form Centre hosted our inaugural artist in residence preview celebrating the playfully challenging work of emerging fine artist Adam Wilson Holmes.

Wilson Holmes presented selected drawn works made throughout his 6 month residency at Durham Sixth Form Centre that explore and question themes of gender, sexuality and sensuality through the re-appropriation of traditional fine art paintings.

Representing a resistant force to the patriarchy has always been a theme within Wilson Holmes’ practice. Striking a balance between appreciating male beauty, and simultaneously creating satirical dialogues of masculine gender constructs. These tensions are often found in many forms throughout Wilson Holmes works, playing with innocence and mischievousness, softness and graphic lines.

Throughout the duration of the residency, Wilson Holmes shared his practice with students through artist talks and tutorials. He supported the development and realisation of their ideas and built strong relationships, particularly with our Foundation students.
